Nowadays Chile is leader in the production of fruits and vegetables in the
South Hemisphere. Chile supplies more than 80 markets in the 5 continents
and has more than 308.000 hectares of fruit trees. That is one of the main
reasons why Fruittrade, the most important fruit fair in the South
hemisphere, is celebrated in Santiago.
3. Edición 2016
• 2016 Edition of Fruittrade has
been celebrated in Chile the
days 9 and 10 November.
• 80 companies have attended
this fair in order to promote its
products.
• High attendance of US
providers.
• The activity programme
include:
• 4 seminars
• 7 technical sessions
• 30 conferences about fruit
and vegetables sector.
4. Cold chain
In one of the technical sessions that take place in the fair they talk about
the cold chain as key element in the food safety.
With an efficient cold chain we can sustain the losses of food
under 2%.
Now this percentages are:
• 9% in the development countries.
• 23 % developing countries.
• 35 % of countries with a
low-temperature structure.
5. Ecologic fruit
North American market is starting to be interested in organic
food: half of US households are already buying organic
products, mainly vegetables but also fruits. Department stores
have seen the potential and are starting to create organic
products lines.

• In 2014 in US there were already more than 14.093 organic gardens.
• California and Washington are the north american states with a larger
number of organic farms.
• 170.000 acres are being transformed in organic cultives.
7. Main goal: China
One of the topics more
commented in Fruittrade was
the exportation of products to
China, a market where Chile is
already the second power,
only after Philippines.
• Growth of the inner cities of China.
• The need to adapt to the new
chinese customers.
• In 2020, 60% of the chinese
consumers of middle class will
live in the inner cities of the
country.
8. Chile’s issues
As producer and exporter Chile
faces 3 major issues:
● Instability of the products:
some of the products weren’t
the best quality.
● Travel times: too long, it’s
necessary to reach
agreements with transport
companies in order to reduce
times.
● Problems finding labour
forces: workers need more
and more qualifications each
time and also it’s a seasonal
work that depends on a lot of
external factors like weather.

• La producción de arándanos ha
aumentado este año en un 19%.
• Las frambuesas por su parte se han
convertido en una de las producciones
más bajas del mundo, produciendo solo 4
toneladas por hectárea.
• Blueberries are the fruit that will lead the market in Chile
this season.
• Blueberries production has increased 19% this year.
• Raspeberries on the other hand have become this year in
one of the lowest productions in the world, producing only
4 tonnes of raspberries per hectare.
10. Campaign trends 2016-2017
The price of strawberries has increased
significantly because the production in US has
been reduced.It could be a good business
opportunity.
