Evidence of Change
Because of the Civil Rights Movement
Signs of Change in Athens, GA
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination on the basis of age, sex, race/ethnicity,
disability and religion.
This photo essay examines the evidence of change in one small Southern university town. Go DAWGS!

Equal Opportunity Employment without regard to
Race
Sex
Age
Disability
Religion
This is a not-so- clear photo of the publicly displayed Equal Opportunity Employment policy at a local technical college. I didn’t have time for a special outing to do a photo shoot, so I took this picture while I was there for training.

Without regard to disability
Women in print identifies this restroom as the
one for females.
The same word in brail as an
accommodation for the visually impaired.
Without regard to disability
This space is one of six in the staff
parking lot that are reserved for those with physical limitations at the local technical college.
Six spaces are reserved for those who are physically impaired at the front door to the main building at the technical college. Each of the other buildings provide these spaces as well.
5
Without regard to Ethnicity
Two restaurants, a market,
an ethnic hair salon, and a laundry are all found in this one shopping center in the heart of an historic community
This sign demonstrates the increased economic opportunity because of the prohibition against discrimination because of ethnicity. Nearby is a day care center that specializes in care for non-Caucasian families.

Without regard to race
The rural community of Framingham, GA demonstrates the
opportunities for jobs in public safety without regard to race or
Ethnicity, maybe even age. I wonder about sex and disability.

Without regard to sex and age
Five of the ten physicians listed on the sign
at the local professional park listed have
traditionally female names.
The elected mayor of Athens is a female who appears to be over 55 years of age.
With anti-discrimination laws came the opportunity for women to see education to work in professional fields. Medicine is just one of those fields. Business parks in the area also have women in the roles of lawyers, realtors, and accountant, among many other traditionally male roles. Summary of Progress in Athens
With just a bit of imagination and an hour of time, it was
possible to document changes in the areas equality without
regard to sex, age, race/ethnicity and disability.
One area left to explore is religion. I’ll be on the lookout in the
future for evidence of progress in this area—or lack thereof—as
I go about my daily business in my community.
