1. Wolfgang Ernst Pauli
Born on April
25, 1900 –
December
15,1958
“This isn't right. This isn't
even wrong.”
Wolfgang Pauli, on a
paper submitted by a
physicist colleague
Swiss (Austrian-born)
physicist (1900 - 1958)
2. Greatest Accomplishment
Wolfgang received Nobel Prize in Physics for his
contribution through his discovery of a new law of
nature, the Pauli principle, involving spin theory,
underpinning the structure of matter and the
whole of Chemistry.
3. Ethnic Background and Personal Life
Wolfgang was born in Vienna, Austria.
Son of a chemist named Wolfgang Joseph Pauli and
his wife Berta Camilla.
Raised as a Roman Catholic.
In November of 1930, he had a divorce.
4. Education and Positions Held
Attended the Döblinger-
Gymnasium in Vienna,
graduating with
distinction in 1918.
Attended the Ludwig-
Maximilians University in
Munich, working under
Arnold Sommerfeld.
Received his PhD in July
1921 for his thesis on the
quantum theory of ionized
molecular hydrogen.
5. Contributions Made to the Science
Community
Wolfgang formulated the
exclusion principle and the
theory of nonrelativistic
spin.
He formulated the Pauli
exclusion principle, which
stated that no two
electrons could exist in the
same quantum state,
identified by four quantum
numbers including his
new two-valued degree of
freedom.
