4. INTRODUCTION
Social Science deals with the life of man and employees scientific method for its
study may be conceived as social science.
Charles Beard’s perception regarding “social science are a body of knowledge
and thought pertaining to human affairs”.
Community resources that facilitate learning include every thing in the
community that can be used to illustrate a concept or generation or to help children
internalise a value. Such resources include every community situation in which children
get opportunity to apply their intellectual, social or personal potentials and skills.
The place of geographical interest are dams, hills, lakes, geology museum,
planetarium etc. The two types of Geography-Human Geography and Physical
Geography.
Geography (from greek geographia earth description is a field of science
dedicated to the study of lands, the features the in habitants and the phenomena of earth.
A literal translation would be “to describe or picture or write about the earth.”
Modern geography is an all-encompassing discipline that foremost seeks to
understand the earth and all of its human and natural complexities not merely where
objects are but how they have changed and come to be.
Geography as a discipline, can be split broadly into two main subsidiary fields:
Human Geography and Physical Geography. The latter examines the natural
environment and how organisms climate, soil, water and landforms production direct.
5. PLANETARIUM
A planetarium (planetaria or planetariams) is theatre built primarily for presenting
educational and entertaining shows about Astronomy and the might sky, or for training
in celestial navigation.
A dominant feature of most planetaria is the large dome-shaped projection screen
on to which scenes of stars, planets and other celestial objects can be made to appear
and move realistically to stimulate the complex motions of the heavens. The celestial
scenes can be created using a wide variety of technologies, for example precision
engineered star balls that combine optical and electro mechanical technology side
projector video and full dome project or systems and lasers.
Planetaria range in size from the Hayden planetariams 2-1 meter dome seating
423 people, to three meter inflatable portable domes where children sit on the floor such
portable planetaria serve education programs outside of the permanent installations of
museums and science centres.
COMPUTERISED PLANETARIA
In 1983, Evan and Sutherland installed the first planetarium projector displaying
computer graphics the digistar 1 projector used a vector graphics systems to display star
fields as well as line art.
A new generation of home planetaria was released in Japan by Takayuki Ohira in
co-operation with Sega Ohira is world wide known as a master mind for building
portable planetaria used at exhibition and events such as the Aichi world expo in 2005.
Later, the megastar projectors released Takayuki Ohira were installed in several science
museums around the worlds.
6. GEOLOGY MUSEUM
The museum as an instrument of popular education is a 20th century phenomenon.
Until very recently museums were private clubs for the intellectually privileged and
exhibits were arranged is such a way as to be almost meaningless to the scientifically or
artistically, uninformed visitor.
The secondary education commission on the role of school museums observed,
“museums play a great part in the education of school children as they bring home to
them much more vividly than any lectures, the discoveries of the past and the various
developments that have taken place in many fields of science and technology.
Geology museums are made up of materials used in classroom teaching which, in
many cases are collected, classified and exhibited by students, with or without the help
of a teacher. The museum activities may be an extra curricular function of the school or
they may be incorporated into scientific experimental method of teaching.
The objectives of this type of geology museums are:
o To construct students in proper scientific methods of laboratory research and
geology museum conservation and exhibition techniques.
o Stimulate enthusiasm for study and research among both teachers and students.
o To form with in the school or the classroom and embryonic community dedicated
to the usual occupation reflected in the school life of adults.
The Indian museum is the largest and oldest museum in India and has rare
collections of antiques, armour and ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies and Mughal
paintings.
7. CONCLUSION
Community provides concrete seeable and tangible resources which are
extremely dynamic interesting and meaningful for the teaching and learning of Social
Studies. It is not enough for a child to have knowledge about the factories, frames,
geology museum and social agencies.
