2. Unit Outcomes
1. State the general safety norms required to be taken in the
given case.
2. Suggest preventive measures to plan activities in the given
situation.
3. Describe the safe procedural steps required to be taken to
prevent the given type of accident.
4. Prepare a work permit in to conduct the given maintenance
activity.
5. Explain the causes of the specified type of accident in the
given situation.
6. Prepare the specification of the firefighting equipment
required for the given type of fire.
3. What is Safety Management
Safety Management:
Industrial safety refers to the management of all
operations within an industry in order to protect its employees
and minimize hazards, risks, accidents.
Importance of Industrial Safety:
In 1972 in USA, fifteen thousand workers were killed in
industrial accidents and about 10 lakhs were injured.
4. Need Of Safety
1. To provide healthy working conditions.
2. To minimize accident rates.
3. To increase the rate of production.
4. Reducing machine damage.
5. Preventing death of talented workers.
5. Safety Committee
1. Administrative, executive and floor shop workers.
2. Aid in developing safety consciousness.
3. Planning safety rules.
4. Ask and watch about safety.
5. Report periodically.
6. General Safety Norms
1. Wear safety glasses
2. Do not use loose clothes
3. Wear hand glows when necessary
4. All areas should be clean
5. All machinery should be shut down
6. All machinery are to be kept clean
and in full working conditions. Fig a : Safety
7. Personnel in Industrial Safety
Management
1. The employer
• Safe working environment
• Required facilities
• Safety training
• Proper maintenance
• Safety rules and regulations
8. Personnel in Industrial Safety
Management
2. The employees:
• Wear safety glasses, hand gloves and safety shoes
• Keep working environment clean
• Follow safety rules
• Report to supervisor
9. Personnel in Industrial Safety
Management
3. The supervisor:
• To ensure that all the equipment are in safe condition
• Workers are performing task according to procedure
• To inform management about state of workers and equipment.

10. Safety Programmes
1. To discover when, where and why accidents occurs.
2. Reduce the accidents and losses.
3. Tries to reduce factors which causes accidents.
4. A safety programme includes four E’s:
• Engineering
• Education
• Enlistment
• Enforcement
11. Accidents and Its Types
Based on degree of injury:
1. Minor Accidents
2. Reportable Accidents
3. Fatal Accidents
4. Internal Accidents
5. External Accidents
6. Major accidents
Fig c: Types of Accidents
12. Accidents and Its Types
Based on place of Accident:
1. Construction Accidents
2. Chemical plant Accidents
3. Industrial Plant Accidents
13. Causes Of Accident
An accident is an unplanned event or incident and for each
such incident there is usually a specific cause or causes if
one could but discover them.
Occupational safety experts have put different causes of
accidents under three broad categories. There are:
1. Human causes or Unsafe Act
2. Technical causes or Unsafe Condition
3. Natural and Other Reasons
15. 1. Human causes or
Unsafe Act
Human causes or unsafe acts by the person
concerned are due to his ignorance or forgetfulness,
carelessness, day-dreaming, etc. This type of behaviour is
usually contrary to the company’s rules and regulation and
acceptable standard safety practice.
Examples of Unsafe Act
oUnauthorized operation or use of equipment.
oUse of defective tools and equipment.
Reasons for such type of accident are as follows:
oPoor knowledge of work
oOverconfident behaviour of worker at the work place.
16. 2. Technical Causes Or
Unsafe Condition
Technical causes or unsafe conditions reflect
deficiencies in plant, equipment, tools, materials handling system,
general work environment, etc. Also, it is an unsatisfactory physical
condition existing in the workplace.
Examples of Unsafe Condition
oLack of warning system
Reasons for such type of accident are as follows:
oPoor workplace layout
oChemical leakages
17. 3.Natural And Other
Reasons
Accidents and disasters can also happen due to
natural means and climatic conditions. A few of them are
excessive noise and lighting, very high temperature,
unhealthy conditions, excessive dust and fumes and arrogant
and uncivilized nature of the immediate seniors.
• Natural causes of accidents:
o Floods
o Land slide collapse
18. Fire Hazards
Threats to fire safety are commonly referred to as fire hazards. A
fire hazard is a potential fire accident or the risk of an
uncontrolled fire that can happen at an industrial workplace.
A fire hazard has a higher possibility of occurring in the oil and
gas industry, mainly due to the fact that workers are surrounded
by flammable liquids and gases that can explode.

Hazards
19. Types/Classes Of Fire
1. Class A: This type of fires involve solid materials of an
organic nature such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber, and
plastics that do not melt.
2. Class B: This type of fires involve liquids. They include
petrol, diesel, thinners, oils, paints, wax, cooking fat and
plastic that melt.
3. Class C: This type of fires involve electricity; energized
equipment, as long as it is plugged in it is considered a class
C fire.
4. Class D: This types of fires involve flammable metals such as
magnesium, aluminium, titanium, sodium and potassium.
20. Fire Drill
Fire drills and other emergency evacuation drills should be
conducted to ensure all employees know how to quickly and
safely leave the building.
As a part of all emergency drills, the employees need to know
whether to shut down their machinery or to leave it running when
they evacuate the building.

21. Safety Procedures
Safe work practices are mostly written methods that define how
responsibilities are performed while minimizing risks to people,
materials, equipment, environment and processes.
Safe Work Procedures are documented procedures for performing
tasks.
22. Work Permit In Safety
A safe work permit also known as a “permit to work” is a
document that includes a description of the work to be performed,
the hazards involved, the precautions to take, the required
authorizations, and other elements.
It is written record authorizing a specific work at a specific
location, and for a specific time. A safe work permit is an
effective vehicle for communicating critical safety information.
23. Types Of Safe Work
Permits
1. Hot Work Permit
2. Cold Work Permit
3. Confined Space Entry Permit
4. Special Permit
