7. The World Bank was initially funding SSD, but withdrew in 1994 at the request of
the Government of India when the state governments were unable to comply with
the loan's environmental and other requirements
India finished the job despite the objections of
environmentalists and the World Bank.
The Narmada Tribunal aimed to set out conditions
regarding the resettlement and rehabilitation of those
displaced by the dams.
The efforts of Narmada Bachao Andolan ("Save Narmada
Movement") to seek "social and environmental justice"
