Necessity of computer control of power
system:
 With the recent progress in power system, the
manual control and analog control are replaced
with digital control since they make overall control
more reliable, faster and flexible. The important
component of this digital control is computer
which litates processing of various large data and
takes care of the constraints that are involved in
the power system operation.
 This per also provides more feasible control
output by considering the various decisions
making for efficient operation andcomplexity of
modern inter connected power system.

Advantages of computer control of power
systems.
 The advantages of computer control of power
systems are as follows:
 1. Its operational cost and maintenance is less.
 2 In operation speed is highest and control action
is fastest.
 3 It has more reliability and accuracy.
 4. It has a scope of achieving flexible control.
 5. It controls and scans the condition of network
faster.

The steps to be followed in planning of a
computer control:
The steps to be followed while planning of a
computer control are as follows:
 1. Problem definition
 2 Study of system
 3. Feasibility study of computer control
 4.Selection of objective
 5.Specifying hardware and software
 6.Study of simulation
 7.Training and implementation.

List of the planning objectives of control
centers :
 The planning objectives of control centers are as
follows:
 Selection of generating units to serve load
demand in both normal and in emergency
conditions.
 Expected load demand
 Assessment of possible contingencies and
schemes in order to deal them.
 To cope network of power system with the
demand and possible generation.

List of the functions of energy control
centres:
 Energy control centres which are also known as
load dispatch centres carry out three functions:
 Planning
 Monitoring of the interconnected power system.
 Data acquisition and system control.

List of the principles on which location of
control centre depends on:
 The principles on which location of control centre
depends are as follows:
 It must be near to the points in the network where
facilities of PLCC (Power Line Carrier
Communication) are available.
 The important personnel must be closer to it
because it is the hub of activities of power
operations.
 It must be near to the hub central communication
facility of the area and must contain a number of
hired (or leased) channels of communication at its
disposal. 9 August 2023

 EMS is nothing but Energy Management
System. It applies overall control over the
whole system.
The functions of EMS are as follows:
 Data acquisition and processing Economy
energy functions
 Security monitoring and control.

Different types of computer control
systems.
 Computer control systems are classified on two
different basis as follows:
 According to the duties of computer system in
order to control the operation of power system
they are classified as
 1. Supervisory control
 2 Direct control

Different types of computer control
systems.
 1. Supervisory Control: In this control, computer is
only a tool for decision making. It produces an
output to vary the set point of the controller which
is operative in the control system that is either
analog or digital type.
 2. Direct Control: In this control, the computer
itself takes decisions as well as implements them
in order to control the process.

 According to the design of the system computer
control can be classified as:
 (i) On-line control
 (ii) Off-line control
 (ii) In-line control

On-line Control: In this control, there are both open
loop on-line control and closed loop on-line control.
Off-line Control: In this control, there is no physical
connection of computer to the actual system. The
human operator gives the data regarding the
process to a computer. It process the data and
provides output through which operator can
recommend a control action
In-line Control: In this control, the operator takes
the data from the system and enters fastly in a
computer through keyboard directly.

THE ENERGY CONTROL CENTRES:
 Recent control centres are arranged at suitable
locations to carry-out both control and e dispatch
functions in order to provide supply of power with
continuity and quality at reasonable price to the
customers.
 Most of the control centres have SCADA for data
collection and monitoring of the system and they
include security and control functions in their
operational objectives
 Some of the objectives of control centres are as
follows: Management of condition of
interconnected power system elements such as
transformers, generators, lines etc and to execute
and verity them. To assure the safety of the

 To display instantaneous condition of the system
and assure its economic operation. To reduce the
duration and extent of consequences because of
faults and restore normal functioning of power

Central Control Centre (CCC): Its functions are network management and
decision making.
Regional Control Centre (RCC): Its function is to implement the instructions of
CCC and control the high voltage transmission and sub-transmission network
directly. It instructs the LCC according to the guidelines of CCC and manages the
distribution network. It also manages captive power generation.
Local Control Centre (LCC): Its function is to control generation according to the
directives and also control sub-transmissionnetwork
