2. Case Study
When I first arrived to Surabaya from LA, I tried to
talk to some of the people. Once I even tried to
ask a person to order food and then the waiter
talked right in my face very loudly. In my culture it
is very rude to do this and it was weird to
experience it. I also had a couple of friends who
would do the same while not knowing they were
spitting in my face.
Problems: It is a habit for some Indonesians to talk
loudly and kind of in your face, while in my
culture it is very rude to do this and can be very
annoying.

a) Ask very politely for the person
to step back and give personal
space.

They could always

without a problem.

embarrassed or
annoyed with how
the situation
happened.
b) Listen to them for a while and
casually say bye to not hurt their
feelings.

You can both talk
and not get any
feelings hurt, at
least not for long.
You could need to
talk about very
important stuff and
not be able to talk
for how fast it
happened.
c) Just keep on moving around or
avoiding anything you wouldn’t
want to happen and if they bother
you, ask if they could step back
politely.

You can talk for as
long as you want
without
disapointment.
They could be
annoyed on how
much you move or
act and think you
are not serious.

4. Best Solution
I think that ‘Just keep on moving around or avoiding
anything you wouldn’t want to happen and if they
bother you, ask if they could step back politely.’ is
the best solution because when you only try to
avoid what you don’t want to happen it doesn’t
cause such a big consequence and you can
always also step back yourself.
