Vibration absorbers are effective for passive vibration control. A vibration absorber is a spring/mass/dashpot system attached to a vibrating body that is tuned to match the natural frequency of the vibrating body. This produces an anti-resonance that minimizes the response at the natural frequency. Larger absorber masses produce a wider bandwidth of absorption. Light damping in the absorber also helps minimize the response at the operating frequency. Examples show a vibration absorber reducing displacement of a single-DOF system to nearly zero and reducing inter-floor motion of a five-story building to zero.
