3. 1. Textile materials & products that have been
engineered to meet particular needs, are suitable for
any medical & surgical application.
2. Important & growing part of the textile industry.
3. Strength, flexibility & sometimes moisture & air
permeability of textile materials are essential for the
medical application.
4. Textile are used in the form of monofilament &
multifilament yarns, woven, knitted & nonwoven
fabrics & composite structure.
3
4. Non toxicity
No allergenic response
The ability to be sterilized

7. Introduction: Used in effecting repair to the body
whether it be wound closure(sutures)or replacement
surgery (vascular grafts, artificial ligaments).
Four key Factors:-
1. Porosity.
2. Fiber cross-section.
3. Non-toxic substance.
4. Biodegradability.
7
8. 1. Sutures:
Used for wound closure.
Monofilament or Multifilament thread.
Biodegradable sutures are used mainly for internal wound
closures.
Non-biodegradable sutures are used to closed exposed
wounds(removed).

9. 2.
Strength & flexibility characteristics of textile materials make
them particularly suitable for soft tissue implants.
Replacement of tendons, ligaments & cartilage.
Textile materials used to replace damaged knee ligaments.
Artificial tendons are woven or braided porous meshes or tapes
surrounded by a silicone sheath.
9
10. :
Orthopedic implants are used for hard tissue application to
replace bones & joints.
Fiber-reinforced composite materials are designed with the
required high structural strength & biocompatibility properties.
It promote tissue ingrowths around the implant a nonwoven mat
made from graphite & PTFE(e.g. Teflon)is used.
10
11. Vascular grafts are used in surgery to replace damaged thick
arteries or veins 6mm,8mm, or 1cm in diameter.
Polyester(e.g. Dacron) or PTFE(e.g. Teflon)with either woven
or knitted structures(warp knitted).
Straight or branch grafts are possible by using either weft or
warp knitting technology.
1.Straight Grafts 2.Branched grafts

12. Introduction: These are extra corporeally mounted
devices used to support the function of vital organs
such as kidney, liver, lung, heart pacer etc. The extra
corporeal devices are mechanical organs that are used
to blood purification & include the artificial kidney,
artificial liver & the mechanical lung.
Three Key Factors:-
1. Porosity
2. Fiber cross-section
3. Non-toxic substance
12
13. Made with a hollow polypropylene fiber or a hollow
silicone membrane.
Used to remove carbon dioxide from patients blood &
supply fresh.
13
14. :
Tiny instrument, about the size of a two cell flashlight.
Made with hollow hair sized cellulose fibers or hollow
polyester fibers slightly larger than capillary vessels.
Fabric which is used to remove waste products from
patient.
