How After School Dance Shaped My Emotional Expression and Perception
1. The extracurricular activity that I chose to discuss is after school dance. I started dance when I was 3, but only continued it for half a year. Then, in 9th grade, I attended the after school dance performance in May. From then, I have been dancing, and haven’t loved it more. It is pretty disappointing that I have not realized how much I enjoy dancing until now, even though I don’t regret stopping. The major WoK that takes part in dance, in my perspective, is emotion and perception.
The way that emotion is in dance, is because you have to dance with all the raw emotion you have inside of you. A dance that lacks this “raw emotion” is lifeless, boring and uninspiring. I feel that I learn better when I dance with all the emotion I have, rather than just doing the steps that my teacher tells me to do. When I’m out on stage, at the end of the year, after everything I learned, it’s really hard to just throw my head back and think about the steps. When I dance, I don’t think about what I’m necessarily doing, more like, I just dance what I feel at the time. I believe that I have really learned a lot in the past few years by being committed, mindfully and emotionally. Something about dance makes me feel more emotional to the things around me, and I think that is because of the emotional aspect that dance has affected me by. Dance is so meaningful to me because I really get to express myself, and I think that is the most important thing.
However, the way that perception is in dance is because everyone perceives a dance differently, just like a work of art. Even though there is a basic theme for each dance, whether someone perceives it that way is what makes it a good dance. I feel that the way I have learned through perception during dance is when I go and watch professional dances, such as the time when I went to the New York City Ballet. Watching Midsummer’s Night Dream was really inspirational, but at the same time confusing because I didn’t really know the story, so it was hard to understand what was happening. But, what made that a really good performance to watch was how I perceived their emotions through their facial expressions and body movements, like fluidity.
To me, dance is a really important factor in my life to help me express what, not only what I like to do, but what I want to feel, and what I want other people to feel. It’s hard to say that I’m completely in love with dance because of the fact that I’ve only been doing it for 3 complete years. Besides that, dance has given me a second way to express my emotions without the use of language, just like my passion for photography.
