In what ways does your media product use real media product
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
2. My opening sequence includes a production logo that I created, titles, enigma codes (mine
uses Barthes codes), action codes, binary opposites, introduction of characters and genre
conventions.
It is conventional to have a production logo in all opening sequences, so I created a
production logo and a name. I decided to go with ‘Shore Productions’ and a logo of waves
and a sun, as it relates to the production name. It is at the very beginning of my video as it is
the first thing that the audience needs to see and it’s also one of the most important things
they need to see. Usually, before a video starts the production logo is the first thing that
comes up on the screen. They normally have an edited sound effect or motion, I applied
that idea to my logo, as I inserted some movement, to make it look more fun and
professional.
3. Enigma Codes
My video refers to Barthes codes, this is because the story isn’t explained and it therefore
becomes a mystery to the audience. The purpose of this is to keep the audience guessing
and then make them want to keep watching to find out the big reveal at the end. In my
video, it isn’t clear on why the girl was so angry that she wanted to murder someone.
My opening sequence also refers to the Proairetic code, as it is used to build tension and
make the audience guess what will happen next. For example, when the girl runs away
through the woods, she’s unaware a dog is chasing her until the end – the audience have
the opportunity to guess what they think will happen to the girl because of all the tension
built.
These codes are used in many music videos, this shows that my media product has
developed enough to be similar to a real media product.
4. Binary Opposites
My video contains a lot of examples of binary opposites. This is because the two main
characters are so different. Binary Opposites are used in a variety of films, one if the most
popular binary opposite examples is that they could be used as good vs evil. In my case,
the main binary opposite is that the girl is very strong and motivated, whereas the boy is
completely unaware and weak.
Another binary opposite that stands out is that the girl is upper to middle class and the boy
is in lower class. This is all portrayed through their clothing, emotions and their actions.
Because of this, I think my media product is a lot similar to other real media products.
5. Genre Conventions
The setting of my video relates well to the crime/drama genre because the woods are
known as being mysterious places and bad things happen there a lot in movies. My media
product is based in the woods and a field, this is referring to the use of those settings in
other real media products.
There aren’t any props used in the woods because they’re just running/chasing scenes,
however there are a few in the field scenes. These props help to develop the story and the
conventions. The props used in my video are usually used in other crime/drama
productions, I think that this makes it easier for the audience to associate my video with
these popular media products and therefore makes them interested and leaves them
wanting to watch my video.
