4. Tim Brown
CEO & President of IDEO, a global design firm
“At IDEO, there’s a kind of back-to preschool feel sometimes about the
environment. The prototyping carts, filled with colored paper and Play-Doh
and glue sticks and stuff - I mean, they do have a bit of a kindergarten feel
to them...the sad thing is, although preschools are full of this kind of stuff,
as kids go through the school system, it all
gets taken away. They lose this stuff that
facilitates this sort of playful and building
mode of thinking. And, of course, by the
time you get to the average workplace,
maybe the best construction tool we have
might be the Post-it notes.”

5. Exploratory Play
• Play as a means of examining
many possibilities, not just
settling on the first one that
comes to mind
• Quantity first, quality later
• Telling the editor to shut up;
“defer judgement”
• What may seem wacky at first
may end up being brilliant

7. Sometimes, our inner editor
needs to be told to go stuff it...

8. Construction Play
• “Thinking with your hands” Tim Brown
• A way of tapping into other
forms of intelligence
• An avenue that renders the
writing process in a more
concrete way
• Ultimately, we are building, but
with words
