communicating effectively about the project.
But there are 10 phrases that are definite
no-nos if you want your project to succeed.

“I know you haven’t finished that
section yet, but this needs to be
done right now!” 01.

Reason:
Constant emergencies aren’t productive.
Better to rethink priorities from the start
and ensure the team understands.

“Please make this task next priority when
you’re done with your current work.”

That’s like saying your colleague can’t
handle complex tasks. Don’t minimize
the importance of the task and never
doubt the skills of your team.

assignee and have them pick the

exactly the time when you need to be
available. It’ll only work if you have the right
tools to keep you connected.

This phrase comes up when the
project delivers results you aren’t
pleased with. Better to set up
project milestones along the way so
no one is disappointed by the
results.

If an assignee doesn’t know his
or her responsibilities and the
chain of command, expect
surprising decisions and
results. Make things clear.

This will make it feel like a
competition. Or that you
don’t trust the first person to
do a good job, and have a
second person to watch for
mistakes. It’s bad for team
dynamics, not to mention
inefficient.

“I want you to work with a
colleague on this, but you
each have responsibility for a
different part of the project.”

and only accept finished work.
