1. 305 MAST Way Highlands, NJ 07732 Chelsea Soriano, Jack Dempsey, Sheila Haggerty, Nicholas McDonald, Brian Kempf, Stephanie Newman, Bright Okere, Nicole Dellera, Nicholas Heins Senior Capstone Design Challenge: Herbarium Background Information: A herbarium is a collection of plants that are preserved, catalogued, stored and arranged. Herbaria are all around the world and provide easy access to the public and scientists alike. Plants in a herbarium are typically pressed and dried plants that are glued to a sheet of heavy paper. Some plants are too large for just one sheet of paper so multiple sheets may be used. Plants could also be preserved in a Alcohol-Glycerin solution of a Formalin solution and in rocks. Also on the paper is the plant’s label which provides helpful information on the plant including it Latin name, the origin of the collection, the time of collection, and the name of the person who collected the plant. In most herbaria, the specimens are stored in specimen cabinets or riker boxes. Herbaria provide a record of plant life. This record is enjoyed by the public as well as used for important research and conservation efforts by scientists and the government. Design Brief: In the Herbarium senior project, we are to build an interactive public herbarium for Sandy Hook, which includes collecting the plants, preparing them for the herbarium, storing the specimens, and designing the herbarium. The herbarium will showcase the plants of the Sandy Hook Gateway Recreation area. Specifications: This herbarium must include the native plants of Sandy Hook. Also these specimens must be preserved, labeled, and housed in the designed herbarium. Limitations: While building the herbarium, including collecting the specimens, the environment must not be hurt in any way. Also all activities must be permitted by the National Park Service and if they are not, those activities cannot be done. The plants featured in the herbarium are native to Sandy Hook. The group will also have limited time and money. Sources: Herbarium: selection of species from european flora . (n.d.). This plant is a Poor-man’s Pepper. An example of what a herbarium specimen out on display looks like. This particular specimen is located at the Emily de Camp herbarium in Island Beach State Park, NJ. This is a riker box which will be used for displaying the specimens. This is one of Sandy Hook’s dunes in which we will obtain specimens.
