It is also defined as an institution that houses a collection of plants for the view of the public interested in learning about the various species of plants. The herbarium is used in educational cases for teaching classes on botany, taxonomy, forestry, agriculture, ethno botany and dendrology. The herbarium is also used by botanists and scientists to identify species and to discover if it is new to the world of science. It is also used by scientists to document where they grew, the anatomy of the plant, and what insects were collected with it. The first one was started back in the late 1500’s by an Italian count named Lucas Ghini. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Alternative Solutions Alternative Solution One My first alternative solution for the labels that would be use in herbarium mounts was an example provide by John Davidson on his website. The label features the main herbarium name. The family of the plant specimen, species name and its location and altitude are included. The family name and species name tags requires the specimen’s Latin name that is recognized by the scientific community. In the location would be described in detail where it was found and its altitude. The longitude and latitude of where the plant was found would be the next tag. Some optional tags in the label include the herbarium accession and the plant accession number. For more specific questions about where the plant was found, the collector’s name and the name of the person who determined the plant is included on the label. The collection date is included in the label to give observers a better time period of when the plant specimen is in bloom. The differences this solution has against the others are more noticeable in its location tags. The location in the label is made as the most important of the rest, containing sections for altitude, longitude and latitude to be recorded. It also features a detailed description of the habitat. The label excludes altogether any description of the specimen itself but in its place is the folklore, which gives a little story behind the collected plant. The second solution for the herbarium was inspired by the label used by the website <http://herbarium.usu.edu/k-12/collecting/specimens.htm>. The label starts with the scientific name tag, which requires the specimen’s Latin name that is recognized by the scientific community. The family name tag gives notice to the origin of the specimen. The tag after that is the English name – the name most familiar to the public or those not studying plants. Alternative Solution # 2 The label was included the plant’s physical origin. The location tag requires the mention of the state and the country the plant was found. If possible, the location with respect to the town or a well known nearby location would be acceptable. The habitat of the plant is mentioned on the label. This includes the longitude and latitude of the location and the physical and biological characteristics of the collection site. The plant collected is also described in the label. This would include but is not limited to whether herbaceous, herb, grass or grass like, or vine; if the specimen is woody and the height and color of the plant. The background of the collection of the plant includes the name of the collector, the collection number and the date the plant was collected. Other plant in the party and the keying path are optional tags that can be included in the final solution. The label would include any other plants in the herbarium that come from the same family group and the keying path for a GPS system. The differences this solution has against the others are more noticeable in its location tags. The location in the label has more detail than the other solutions. There is more background about where the plant was discovered and collected. The label, unlike the other solutions, features the description of the plant and the keying code for a GPS tracking system to locate the collection site. It also allows for viewers to find out if any plants in the herbarium are from the same family. Alternative Solutions (cont’d) Alternative Solution Three The third solution was inspired by the label that was used by the Montana State University herbarium. The label for this solution would be placed on the right hand corner of the plant press paper. The label includes the location broken up into two parts: the nearest landmark and the elevation. The nearest landmark line is to help get a better picture of where the pant was taken from. The elevation is the estimate made after finding the elevation of the nearby town. The solution has after the location the aspect, which is where the specimen was facing. Topography and the slope would be optional tags on the label to be used. These tags would be one of the few tags that would have choices to circle, like that of a multiple choice question. Topography involves the type of terrain the specimen was found in. This includes mountains, foothills, breaks, plains and riparian. The slope would be the angle of the terrain at which the specimen was found. This would include nearly level, moderate, very steep and rolling. To keep people informed of the best place to find the species, the abundance tag is used in the label to tell if the area the specimen was taken from has many of the same specimens to examine or if it is scarce. The tree over story tag was placed to tell if it was collected from a shaded area under a tree. The abundance tag and the tree over story tag are also like that of topography and slope tags, with selected choices to circle and delineate from. The collector tag is placed to inform who collected the specimen and allows others interested in the plant to ask questions to the collector. The plant-number and verified by tags are optional for the use of the label. The plant number requires the plant number assigned in the field record and the verified by tag is for a qualified botanist to sign. The differences this solution has against the others are more noticeable in its location tags. The location in the label is features elevation and nearest landmarks to provide viewers with a better idea of where the specimen originated from. It also features a description of the habitat separated by four tags. This includes the tree over story, the slope and topography. These four tags in the label differ from the others because they are stylized as multiple choice questions, with different choices for each tag. The label excludes altogether any description of the specimen itself and folklore.
