The Romance languages are a
group of languages descended
from Vulgar Latin. They form a
branch of the Italic Languages
within the Indo-European
language family.
The five most widely spoken
Romance languages are
Spanish, Portuguese, French
Italian, and Romanian
The term “Romance” comes
from the Vulgar Latin adverb
Romanice derived from Romani-
cus ( the Roman vernacular).
The word ‘romance’ with the
modern sense of romance novel
or love affair has the same
origin. In the medieval literature
of Western Europe, serious writ-
ing was usually in Latin, while
popular tales, often focusing on
love, were composed in the ver-
nacular and came to be
called “romances”.

The Arabic influence on the Spanish
language is mostly lexical. This means
that it is mainly visible in the vocabu-
lary of the Spanish language, rather
than in its grammar or syntax (the ar-
rangement of words and phrases to
create sentences). It is estimated that
there are over 4,000 Arabic loanwords
and over 1,000 Arabic roots.Together,
they make up around eight percent of
the Spanish vocabulary.
As Al-Ándalus was in many ways a
more advanced society than most
other European cultures, Spanish
words derived from the Arabic lan-
guage are mainly found in fields that
were introduced to the peninsula by
Arabs, for e.x. The judiciary, adminis-
tration, business and food names.

In 1501 .. Castilian authorities delivered
an ultimatum to Granada’s Muslims, they
could either convert to Christianity or
be expelled. Most did convert, in order
not to have their property and small
children taken away from them. Many
continued to dress in their traditional
fashion speak Arabic, and secretly prac-
ticed Islam (crypto-Muslims). With the
decline of Arabic culture many used the
aljamiado (Aljamía texts are manuscripts
which use the Arabic script for transcrib-
ing European languages).
In 1502 .. Queen Isabella I of
Castile formally rescinded toleration
of Islam for the entire Kingdom of Cas-
tile, and in 1508 .. Castilian authorities
banned traditional Granadan clothing.
