WORKBOOK 
A workbook is a modification of the textbook and it is slowly gaining prominence in 
mathematics classroom. A workbook should be written by an experienced teacher with care and 
foresight. A good workbook suggests appropriate activities and exercise in addition to what the 
textbook does. It saves time for the students as they need not recopy the problems and exercises from 
the textbook. It eliminates mistakes committed due to the wrong copying of numbers and digits. It 
facilitates uniformity in students’ work and facilitates easy correction of their work. It serves as a 
supplementary teaching device. It provides opportunities for pupils to develop computation and 
problem solving skills. It provides activites and exercises in addition to those given in textbooks. It 
helps slow learners to learn at their own pace. If the exercise are well graded it can satisfy 
requirements raised by individual differences.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD MATHEMATICS WORKBOOK
A workbook should have the following characteristics 
1. The physical features of the workbook such as over page, paper, print and binding should be 
good. The price of the book should be reasonable. 
2. It should be written by experienced teachers of mathematics. 
3. It should clearly reflect the educational outcome that the author tries to bring about. 
4. It should provide a variety of well-graded exercises for each topic. 
5. It should be provided with enough space for working out the problems. 
6. It should be provided with exercises which cater to the individual differences and individual 
needs. 
7. It should be accompanied by a list of answers to various graded assignments or exercise given 
in the workbook to enable the pupils to verify their answers through immediate feedback. 
8. It should be made attractive and appealing by suitable illustrains and diagrams wherever 
necessary. 
ADVANTAGES
1. Workbook supplements classroom learning. 
2. It promotes self learning and self assessment. 
3. It provides for working out different types of assignment. 
4. It gives practice of classroom learning and thereby reinforces learning. 
5. It promotes mathematisation.
