4. ASSIGNMENTS
The term assignment is very familiar to the teacher as well as pupil.
Assignments form a very important part of teaching.
DEFINITION : Usually any exercise given by the teacher
to the pupil as part of the lesson, or any
follow up work suggested for study is
called an assignment.
5. It should be a part of teaching and certain
time should be set apart after teaching time
for assignments. After teaching a lesson,
teacher assigns a work, provides guidelines
and sets time limit for completion of the
assignment.
6. TYPES OF ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments are of 2 types:
(a)Class Assignments-which should be supervised by the teacher.
(b)Home Assignments-which encourage students to do independent work at
home.
Assignments can be further divided into five parts :
Problem, Constructions, Diagrams, Practical Activities,
Work done outside classroom.
7. STEPS IN GIVING ASSIGNMENTS
1. Planning of the assignment.
2. Exposition or presentation of the method or
process.
3. Assessing student’s understanding.
4. Supervising the assignment work.
5. Evaluating the assignment.
8. IMPORTANCE OF CLASS ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments help in applying what has been taught in
the class to new situations.
They help in realising the aims of teaching a lesson.
They help in measuring student’s progress and
achievements.
They motivate and reinforce further learning.
9. Differentiated assignments helps in judging the
pupil’s understanding.
Differentiated assignments can help both
mathematically gifted and slow learners alike.
The teacher can pay individual attention to her
students as they work on their assignments.
10. Suggestions for Making Assignments Effective
Assignments should be made significant and meaningful by
correlating with previous knowledge and experiences of the
pupil.
They should be clear and definite.
They should be individualised catering to individual student’s
abilities and needs.
Proper directions and clear instructions should be provided.
11. Criteria Of A Good Assignment
The assignment should stimulate reflective thinking and
be flexible enough for students to discover things on
their own.
They should be brief and the language used in the
instruction should be simple and to the point.
It should have clear, specific, and attainable objectives.
They should be geared to suit the ability and interest of
the students.
They should be related to the topic under study.
12. HOME ASSIGNMENT
School time is not sufficient to exhaust everything that a
student has to learn in mathematics.Homework has to be
given to supplement the schoolwork and to provide for
application and practice necessary for fixation of ideas,
concepts, rules, and formulae. Moreover homework helps
the students to recapture what has been in the class that
day.It provides the link between each day’s work and next
day’s work.
13. PURPOSES OF HOMEWORK
The important purposes of homework are ;
to provide drill on operations whose theory is undertood.
to fix in memory rules and formulae that need to be
memorised.
to inculcate the habit of regular and systematic work
to provide opportunity for quiet thinking and independent
work.
14. Criticisms Levelled Against Homework
• The children are forced to carry the school atmosphere to te
house.
• The burden of the homework might take the student hate the
subject, the teacher or even the school.
• Over burden of the homework affects the child both physically
and mentally.
• It deprives the children of their leisure time.
• Constant anxiety of some work adversely affects the child’s
health and retards his academic progress.
15. MERITS OF HOMEWORK
It encourages independent work and self-responsibility.
It develops the habit of regular and systematic work.
It helps in clarifying the doubts of the students.
It supplements classroom works.
It provides a link for parent-teacher co-operation.
It helps in fixation of ideas and principles.
It forces the students to revise what has been done in the
class.
16. Some Guidelines for Making Homework more Effective
Homework timetable should be prepared in consultation with
other teachers so that it doesn’t overburden the students.
It should not be too difficult or too easy.
As far as possible, home conditions of the students should be
borne in mind while assigning homework.
Homework should not be given in a particular lesson until it has
been clearly understood even by the slow learners.
17. Contd…
Homework should be made more interesting by assigning
practical work relating to the unit such as preparing models,
collecting data, field work, and so on.
Homework should be regularly checked and feedback should
be given to the students.
Homework should never be made as a means of punishment.
18. CORRECTION OF ASSIGNMENTS
It is not enough that the teacher gives intelligently planned
homeworks.Correction of the assignment is equally important. The
teacher has to check the assignments for accuracy and
understanding and feedback should be given to the children. This
will help the students to gauge their own understanding of the
subject. The common misconceptions may be pointed out to the
whole class for clarification and individual mistakes to the
respective individuals. A progress chart an be maintained to
monitor and keep track of the student’s work. The teacher may use a
grading system to assign relative positions to the student on the
basis of their homework.
