9. Meta-Trends Impacting the Enterprise
The lines are blurring between point solutions around core mobility components as mobile-oriented ISVs
strive to become end-to-end mobile solution providers …
As part of their internal and customer-facing mobile-enablement initiatives, organizations
will be well served by reviewing existing business processes to uncover process re-design
opportunities in a new, mobile context.
Organizations that have made mobility investments have likely deployed an MDM solution
to ensure that mobile users, applications and databases is appropriately secured with
techniques such as multi-factor authentication. This will be critical moving forward as
organization grant access to corporate data to their increasingly remote workforce.
Mobile application enablement can bring an organization the ability to leverage the
potential of its enterprise applications for both its internal and customer-facing business
applications. Additionally, advancements in mobile AD platforms is giving IT organizations
easy to use, intuitive tools to create custom mobile applications.
New methods to secure corporate data have emerged that will give CIOs the confidence
and peace of mind to extend access to data behind the corporate firewall to their on-the-
go employees and remote workforce. Organizations will be best served by evaluating
MAM solutions to provision, control and maintain the growing number of mobile
applications that their employees and customers are taking advantage of.

The MAM segment has become quickly become very crowded with a startups and established mobile-oriented ISVs (primarily MDM and MEAP vendors) all
vying for marketshare in this nascent market. Most prominent MDM and MEAP vendors have expanded their solution range to include many key and “core”
MAM capabilities.
Pure-play MAM vendors such as Apperian, AppCentral, App47, and Partnerpedia were early to market with their offerings. These vendors have also
succeeded in developing sales channels for their solutions and have.

Editor's Notes VDC Research Group (VDC) provides exceptionally detailed direct-contact primary market research and consulting services to many of the world's largest technology suppliers, innovative start-ups and leading investors. The firm is organized around six practices, each with its own focused area of coverage, but all committed to the firm’s core philosophy. Moving forward consumerization of IT (CoIT) and BYOD policies will have a profound impact on mobile application enablement in the enterprise – while there has been notable attrition in BlackBerry deployments, fragmentation remains an issue and the need for self-service tools will increase as mobile workforces expand. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is top of mind for CIOs as they grapple with managing and expanding their mobile workforce. Enterprise-grade solutions have emerged to deal with the device diversity that is the hallmark of a BYOD environment, yet many implementations are limited to generic mobile device management (MDM) to provision and secure mobile devices. Indeed, MDM is foundational and required for many organizations that have invested in a mobile strategy for their workforce – however, modern solutions have emerged that offer new methods to secure corporate data that will give CIOs the confidence and peace of mind to extend access to corporate data to their remote mobile workforce. The enterprise mobility solutions market is evolving very quickly – the vendor landscape has become crowded, and pace of change in mobile platform and innovation coming from important mobile startups will continue to challenge CIOs and IT organizations moving forward – market leaders will be well served by regularly evaluating new technologies as they come to market as they can help to achieve competitive advantage.
