provided with and develop strategies for
assisting students to reach their potential.

EdTech team begins discussion and
investigation of possible 1:1 options for
grades 3-5.
Draft 1: EdTech Strategic Vision
released and consultation with Admin
begins. Extension of 1:1 MacBook plan
detailed, centred on iPads.
Plan for 1:1 iPads ratified and
introduced to ES PTO. Survey
conducted immediately afterwards.

> in 2012-13 KIS introduced an incentive for all
teachers to use a portion of their annual Professional
Development Fund to contribute towards to cost of
purchasing an iPad.

• approximately one third of our teachers purchased
an iPad…and we were ready to support this with
appropriate professional development
opportunities.

infrastructure that can support the iPad in a 1:1

Turning the tide
following this inauspicious start, edtech:
1. developed a very detailed plan and strategy document.
We developed a version specifically for parents.
2. focussed on vision for learning
3. took every opportunity to consult with parents, and
distributed copies of our vision statement and proposal for
One to World.

4. We delivered a 6 week training course for parents so
that they could experience our vision first hand.
5. we demonstrated the value and actively and
aggressively promoted it.
6. we built a cohort of teachers and rallied under the One
to World name and philosophy. We started training.
7. we held a ‘town-hall’ meeting

Dig deeper and be specific in hiring strategy. Ask
for specifics.
If building a cohort, start by recruiting leaders, or
technology integrationists looking to get back into
a classroom full-time. We did…and it works.

• Family Sharing has changed the game
• We should include an item in the Responsible Use
Policy authorising KIS to create and manage

• A Learning Management system
is the ‘glue’ that binds a 1:1
program
• Productivity/efficiency gains.
• Parental participation
• Publishing and networking
platform.
• A place to teach and learn digital
citizenship skills.

Lesson 9
storage & charging

• Startup rule: students must keep their primary
charging device at school
• however…at KIS, our charge stations are now
mostly empty.
• Don’t over-invest.

Elegance is
sometimes
over-rated…
iPads come to

important with time

• Keep iPads out of the cupboards and off the
charge
• Encourage creativity by defining the learning
according to outcomes, rather than products.
• Allow students to choose how to express their
thinking and creativity

• Allow the organic growth of student technology
coaching in classrooms. It doesn’t need a name.
• Publishing is powerful and sharing is empowering.
• Connect with learning and learners beyond
classroom/school boundaries.
