Original iPad News release
SAN FRANCISCO—January 27, 2010—Apple® today introduced
iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and
sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to
music, playing games, reading e-books and much more.
Rushing To Catch Up

"The adoption rate of iPad in education is
something I've never seen from any
technology product in history. Usually
education tends to be a fairly conservative
institution in terms of buying, or K-12
does, and we're not seeing that at all on the
iPad."
                          -- Apple CEO Tim Cook
iPads or MacBooks?

 • iPads selling into schools at twice the rate
   of MacBooks
 • Over 8 million iPads in schools worldwide
 • 4.5 million in US schools
 • LAUSD is considering a 1:1 iPad initiative
10 steps to a Successful iPad Implementation in Schools
10 steps to a Successful iPad Implementation in Schools
Ten Keys to a Successful iPad Implementation
1. Clarify educational objectives
“How Can We
 Use Them?”
“Automating” or “Informating”

Reinforces existing practices Re-imagination of goals and
with accent on efficiency processes
Integrating Technology into a Holistic Approach

Have to ask tough questions:
 What sort of skills does a graduate student need today?
 How do our students learn most effectively?
 How can we use technology in a transformative way to help
  learners achieve their goals?
Will Technology Improve Education?

           Automating Informating

Projecting and distributing content Students creating and publishing

Typing and word processing Connect, communicate and collaborate

Drills and flashcards Research, analysis and problem solving

PowerPoint lecturing Personalized, independent learning

Giving students power to connect and
Delivering a fixed curriculum
                                      pursue passions

More efficient teaching Student centered learning
The key to learning isn’t knowing the right answers.

The key to learning is knowing how to ask
the right questions.

Schools should become
centers of inquiry.
Ten Keys to a Successful iPad Implementation
1. Clarify educational objectives
2. Building a solid foundation
Do you have a solid foundation?
 Robust, reliable wireless system
 Planning bandwidth needs is critical
 Elements to consider:
 What connection comes in to campus?
 How well is it distributed within campus?
 Allow for growth
 More multimedia = more bandwidth
 Publishing requires higher upload speeds
Ten Keys to a Successful iPad Implementation
1. Clarify educational objectives
2. Building a solid foundation
3. Communicate and prepare
Communicate Your Vision

Ten Keys to a Successful iPad Implementation
1. Clarify educational objectives
2. Building a solid foundation

Do you have plans and
 procedures in place?
Device Management
• Who buys and owns devices?

• Where will devices be stored and charged?

• Security procedures?

• Dealing with damage or theft?

• Restrictions? Web filtering?

• Procedures for distributing the iPads?

• Clear Acceptable Use Policy? (hotspots, COPPA)

• Are your IT staff trained in iPad management?
App Management
• How and by whom will apps be purchased?

• How will teachers try out devices and apps?

• How will apps by delivered to devices?

• How will updates be applied?
Ten Keys to a Successful iPad Implementation

3. Communicate and prepare
4. Develop management strategies
5. Sharing is not always caring
The blessing…
If they are shared … it could also be the curse.
Most apps don’t even have a login…

Technology training has been a problem throughout history…
The Introductory Workshop

“Relax. I took a two hour workshop on
       removing wisdom teeth.”
                                http://milkweedmama7.blogspot.com/
Some Tips

 Training is an ongoing process, not a one time workshop.
 Remember, you don’t have to be the expert … you’ll NEVER
    be the expert.
 Culture change often starts at the bottom up. Nurture your
innovators and let them lead the way.
 Timely, in-class help is an invaluable asset for teachers.
 You spent huge amounts on the equipment. Spend on the
staff and training to make it work.
 Culture change requires planning and lots of time. Make the
    time for it.
