The interview
10. Main parts of the interview
• Mrs Karpodini believes that there is not
really any change in winters.
• She thinks that some winters the latest
years were calmer, but this is probably
connected with the world’s weather and
global warming.
• Tourism has changed a lot the flora and
fauna on the island, people now have to
plant themselves.
11. The pupils who took the interview (Thanasis Balios and
Thanasis Malalamatenios) are posing with the lovely lady
Karpodini Argiro, aged 87, who shared her views with us.
14. March 2015
(2 weeks after the 10 beauforts
winds of February)
CLIMATE
Paros climate is temperate, like the
rest of the Cyclades Islands.
Winters are mild and during summer
season the weather is sunny, hot
with strong winds called meltemia,
very appreciated by windsurfers .
Summer evenings are usually
cooler, with a little humidity and you
will generally have the perfect
weather for your holidays.
From the month of January to
March, Paros Island’s temperatures
vary from 11°C to 15°C, sometimes
it goes above 25. During the spring
months the average temperature
climbs up to 20-30°C. During
summer months the weather warms
up offering hot temperatures with
Meltemia.
16. Winds can be very strong during winter and cause many problems.
Trees fell down, ships do not sail, roofs are destroyed.
17. Rain (showers), Paros winters
Traditionally, February is considered as the rainy month.
18. Snow, Paros winters
It is quite rare to snow on
Paros, although it is not
weird to have some snowy
days during Christmas,
especially villages at high
altitude.
20. Have winters on Paros Island
changed through the years?
• Most of the residents believe that the weather
conditions have not changed.
• Some claim that the winters nowadays are a bit calmer,
but they also emphasize to the following facts:
• There are weather forecasts that can predict everything
• Houses are built with better materials
• Humidity, the no1 problem in winters, is dealt with stronger
built walls and dehumidifiers
• Seasons on Greek islands have big differences with the
ones on the mainland. Their weather does not vary so
much, winters are considered calm and summers cool
and breezy.
21. Proverbs and quotes about weather and time
If there is much rain in winter, the spring
is generally dry.
When the cat turns towards the north
and licks its face, the wind will soon blow
from that direction.
= At a cursed place, in May rains.
= January’s moon looks like
day’s sun.
Someone who is wet, is not afraid of rain.
What wind collects, devils spreads (easy
come, easy go)
Wisdom comes with age (time/years)
Time is money.
= March is, caresses does,
either cries either laughes
= Clean sky is not afraid of
thunders (a clear conscience laughs at
false accusations)
One swallow does not bring spring.
Time heals all wounds.
