Most Unusual Flowers of India -Tips & Facts

Flowers are a magnificent creation to mankind, They can be used as a form of gift
on special occasions or to bring a smile on a sad face. There is so much that flowers
can do with little to no restrictions and make the world a beautiful place.
We all have seen and we all know about a lot of pretty flowers in India, like the
much-known roses or the lesser known orchids, but do you know that there are a
lot of rare flowers that are totally unique in their appearance? While some of these
flowers will make you grin, the others will totally blow your mind away.
Let’s have a look at a few of the most unusual flowers that you may not have heard
of or seen.
1. Phalaenopsis (moth orchid)

The Phalaenopsis or 'Moth Orchid' is the most common orchid due to its
ease of production and the availability of blooming plants year-round. Phals
are easily grown in the home and stay in bloom for a very long time.
Light is easy to provide for phalaenopsis. They grow easily in a bright
window, with little or no sun. An east window is ideal in the home; shaded
south or west windows are acceptable. It has become increasingly popular in
recent years given to its suitability as a house plant.
Moth Orchid can be found in nearly every color of the rainbow, from white
to yellow, green, almost red and various shades of pink.

2. Flame Lily

The flame lily is widespread in tropical and southern Africa, thriving on the
sparse savannah woodlands, sand dunes and grassland in sandy loam soil. It
is also known as gloriosa superba.
The stems are usually up to 3 metres long, though occasionally to 6 metres;
they can be erect, or they can climb into surrounding vegetation where they
attach themselves by means of tendrils at the ends of the leaves.
The whole plant is highly toxic due to the presence of the alkaloid colchicine,
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pains are often the first signs of
poisoning.
3. Lobster Claw

Heliconia, also popularly known as lobster-claw, wild plantain or false
bird-of-paradise, is a beautiful flower with multi-color bracts and varied
flower structure. Heliconias are native to the tropical Americas and the
Pacific Ocean islands west to Indonesia.
Heliconia’s bracts are so large and colorful that they almost hide the flowers
altogether. It has oblong leaves growing opposite one another on non-woody
stems, often forming large clumps with age. They grows to a height of 3-30
feet in height.
They grown similar as landscape plants, as there are some species of
heliconia Which have upright facing flowers. Some of this plant are droop
down from the main stem and are called hanging Heliconia.
4. Monkey Orchid

Monkey Orchid scientifically known as Dracula Simia. The Monkey Face
Orchid is an incredibly rare flower. It is a fuzzy bloom that, owing to its odd
arrangement of petals, strongly looks like a monkey faced cotton ball.
This flower at times also bears an uncanny resemblance to Simia (it is a kind
of Lemur) because of its dotted eyebrows, dark eyes and furry nose, and its
two long fang-like petals make it appear like a Dracula.
It grows at elevations 1000-2000 feet above sea level and the flowers smells
like ripe oranges. They found in the forests of southeastern Ecuador and
Peru. They are incredibly rare flowers. The Monkey orchid is not season
specific, and in its natural habitat it can flower at any time.
5. Passion Flower

Due to its appearance this flower is known as clock flower, purple
passion as there are 500 known species of passion flower. The family of this
plant is called as passiflora. Passionflower grows throughout South America
and some parts of the southern United States.
People have used one variety of passion flower, passiflora incarnata which
is used for medical purposes such as anxiety and insomnia.
Some researchers believe that passionflower supplements may help treat
anxiety, insomnia, and certain forms of pain because it may increase levels
of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical the brain makes to help
regulate mood.
Determining the effectiveness and identifying side effects in humans will
require further research.
6. Tuberose

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.)is one of the most important tropical ornamental
bulbous flowering plants cultivated for production of long lasting flower spikes. It is
popularly known as Rajanigandha or Nishigandha. It belongs to the family
Amaryllidaceae and is native of Mexico.
The flowers are attractive and elegant in appearance with sweet fragrance. It has
long been cherished for the aromatic oils extracted from its fragrant white flowers.
Tuberose blooms throughout the year with star shaped, waxy and loosely arranged
on spike that can reach up to 30 to 45 cm in length.
Tuberose can successfully be grown in pots, borders, beds and commercially
cultivated for its various uses. Tuberose represents sensuality and is used in
aromatherapy for its ability to open the heart and calm the nerves, restoring joy,
peace and harmony.
8. Crown flower

The crown flower also known as calotropis gigantea has blossoms that are used
in lei-making. Crown flower leis have royal symbolism. The blossom's petals roll
back and expose what looks like a small crown. This flower was a favorite of Queen
Liliuokalani, Hawaii's last queen.

scent. The shrub prefers coastal areas and can grow up to 15 feet (4.6 m) tall. The
plant produces a milky sap that can irritate the skin and is poisonous in large
quantities.
