Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition Italy will host
from May 1 to October 31 in Milan. More than 140 countries
will show the best of their technology to guarantee healthy, safe
and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet.
The Expo also involves international organizations.

Feeding the Planet
Milan was selected as the host-city for the Universal Exposition and Italy chose Feeding the
Planet, Energy for Life as its central theme. Expo Milano 2015 will show the problems of
nutrition and the resources of our planet. The idea is to open up a dialogue between international
players, and to exchange views on these major challenges which affect everyone.
The History of the Universal Exposition
The Meaning of Expo
The first edition was in 1851 in The Crystal Palace of London. It was
the perfect stage to show the most ambitious successes of Man. It is
an occasion to share technologies, innovation and discoveries. The
Eiffel tower was built in Paris when the city hosted the Exposition in
1889.
The Universal Exposition is a non-commercial exhibition. It was the
place to present creativity and knowledge and where every country
could demonstrate what it had to offer to the world.
The Universal Exposition takes place on a dedicated site and all the
other countries are invited, through diplomatic channels, to participate.
Every Universal Exposition leaves behind monuments and buildings
that are treasured by the host city, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the
Atomium in Brussels or the Space Needle in Seattle. But that is not all:
the Universal Exposition is an opportunity to change the face of the
city, to improve quality of life for its citizens and to attract more tourists.
The Universal Expositions of Shanghai, Lisbon, Brisbane, Spokane
and many other cities have left the legacy of modern neighborhoods,
new infrastructures, parks and museums.
Theme Areas
Theme Areas provide

PAVILION ZERO
●
Located at the entrance of
Expo Milano 2015 and
curated by Davide
Rampello, Pavilion Zero is
the visitors’ first stop. Here
they will be able to explore
the history of food and the
major issues impacting the
future of our planet.
●
FUTURE FOOD DISTRICT
●
In this pavilion curated by Carlo Ratti of
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
visitors will have the opportunity to
observe future food chain scenarios by
observing the technology used for the
conservation, distribution, purchase, and
consumption of food.
CHILDREN'S PARK
●
Curated by Sabrina Cantarelli in collaboration with
Reggio Children, this area is dedicated entirely to
children: the food producers and consumers of the
future. In this area will be numerous child-friendly
offerings, including an educational game to help
the younger ones explore the complex theme of
life and the sustainability of the planet from a
variety of points of view.
●
BIO PARK
●
Biodiversity Park – This area has been
developed by Emilio Genovesi, CEO of
Material ConneXion Italia and his team of
professionals, supported by the University
of Milan Department of Agriculture. The
Biodiversity Park will feature a number of
gardens and spaces exploring various
approaches to farming.
ART AND FOOD
●
– Curated by Germano Celant, this area
provides a preview of the exhibition entitled
Arts & Food, which will examine how food
and foodstuffs have been portrayed in art
since the 1851, the year of the first
Universal Exposition. The exhition
Arts&Food is to be held at the Triennale
building in central Milan, and will serve to
reinforce the link between Expo Milano 2015
and the city itself.
