1. “#LetUsBike” Project
The Idea
Let Us Bike is the title of a project that was born in order to create an infrastructure for
facilitating eco-friendly mobility on two wheels. This bike path is addressed to the
cycle’s users, both tourist cyclists and amateur ones. We tried to incorporate the value
of the resources offered by the territory on which the path has been designed. Territory
that offers great resources in cultural and culinary terms. A great opportunity to
discover these costumes, both Italian and foreign, is represented by the Universal
Exposition (EXPO 2015) that will take
place from May to October 2015.
In addition to the above purposes, the
project has also some social and
environmental aims. The pollution results
to grow at exponential levels in the area of
the province of Milan because of the high
density of industries and massive use of
vehicles. In a future respectful perspective
of the environment, it is needed to take
into consideration the possibility to use a
cheap, healthy and popular mean as the
bicycle is.
A new idea of mobility is represented by
the intermodal exchange, that is to say the
use of different transport means, both in
your daily life and in sightseeing occasions. In this way, it will be possible to boost the
cycle tourism sector that turned out to be remarkably driving in many foreign countries’
economies.
2. The project “Let Us Bike” has the following main goals:
Environmental safeguard
Incentive to cycle tourism
Rising of bike tracks’ security
Education to psychophysical wellness
Making mobility a social cohesion experience
Induction to the use of different means of transport, i.e. “intermodal exchange”
Drawing up the basis for a sustainable development in the Milanese metropolis
Arousing all ages to the daily use of bikes
Revaluation of those culturally rich cities situated in the surrounding areas of
Milan
Analytical path
Our path has a length of 65 km as it also contains an itinerary tour in the Parco del
Ticino. Considering the alternative path from Milan to Cornaredo (8 km), it has a total
length of 73 km. Our path has the following stages:
1. Cemetery Maggiore of Milano
Cemetery built at the end of the XIX century and designed by Mazzocchi and
Brotti. On January 1st 1885 the inauguration was held and the area was of
400,000 m2. Nowadays the area is of about 700,000 m2, 120,000 m2 of which
are garden that makes it the biggest cemetery of Milan.
2. City of Rho
City that dates back to the Roman Age of about 50,000 inhabitants that offers
the possibility to visit different places of worship and it also hosts different
prominent industries like the sausage factory Giuseppe Citterio.
Rho will hosts the Universal Exposition (EXPO 2015) from May to October 2015
whose theme is the feeding.
3. City of Lainate
Residential city that hosts a remarkable cultural heritage, Villa Litta Borromeo
Visconti. That is a Villa di Delizie whose main attraction is the Ninfeo, that during
the summer time offers water games shows.
3. In addition to be a city rich in culture, the company Perfetti Van Melle (leader
sweets producer) has its headquarters on the territory of Lainate.
4. City of Vanzago
Town of about 8,000 inhabitants that accommodates the WWF natural reserve.
This latter gives you the possibility to immerse yourself in an untouched and
uncontaminated environment where autochthonous animals live.
5. City of Magenta
Town of 23,000 inhabitants that was land of battle in the XIX century during the
second independence Italian war.
6. City of Boffalora on Ticino
Village of about 4,000 inhabitants crossed by the Naviglio Grande. It also offers
breath-taking panoramas. In detail, the path goes through the Parco Lombardo
in the Ticino Valley that results to be particularly rich in fauna and flora.
National framework
In Italy the bike paths’ span turn out to be not very extended, if we take as benchmarks
European countries such as France, Germany and Holland. As Italy is one of the most
advanced countries from an economic and cultural point of view in Europe, our nation
has a great artistic and cultural heritage should adopt these standards
In this way, it would not only be guaranteed a higher security level to citizens that use
these infrastructures, but a deep renewal
that will benefit the whole community. These
effects are not only addressed to the Italian
population, but to the entire European
population.
Reckoning the fact that Milan is a big
metropolis, thousands of workers and
students daily travel medium-long distances
with private vehicles. Doing this, the
increase of Co2 emissions is fostered. This highly dangerous situation could be
relieved whether the use of bicycles would be more common.
4. Who the audience is…
The main stakeholders the project is addressed to are:
Students
Tourists and cyclists
Surrounding areas’ communters
Amateurs
Added value
The features that give an extra value to the project “Let Us Bike” are the following:
Promoting the use of bicycles as they are an easy-to-use, cheap and eco-
friendly mean of transport
Diffusing the culture of bikes through the realization of dedicated paths
Establish a direct relationship between the creators of the track and the final
users via a virtual community so that the acquired knowledge can be widely
spread
5. Who we are…
The project in object has been realised by the classroom V A SIA by the Technical
Institute Enrico Mattei from Rho, as it took part in the ideas contest “Vento gira nelle
scuole!” announced by the Milan’s Politecnico University.
We have welcomed this initiative with curiosity inasmuch the opportunity of conceiving
and designing a bicycle track that improves and evaluates the areas that are part of it,
made us enthusiast. The teamwork has been coordinated by the teacher of Physical
Education Mr Ruggiero Dascanio who guided us through a formative experience of
self-management and self-empowerment.
How to contact us
Follow us on the project’s social networks pages to have constant updates and extra
info about the path Milan – Boffalora. We publish periodically articles that deal with
cycle tourism, restaurants and attractions that can be interesting for the cyclists thatwill
take the above path.
