2. The Flag
The flag of Mexico is a tricolored flag.
It is made up of three vertical different-colored
bands.
The colors are green, white, and red, and each
has its own significance.
In the white section there is also the shield of
Mexico.
3. Meaning of the Colors
In the Mexican flag, each color has a meaning:
Red: the spilled blood of national heroes.
White: unity.
Green: hope.
4. Meaning of the Colors
Before the revolution, though, the colors had
different meanings. They were changed after
the separation of State and Church.
Red: Unity between Europeans and Mexicans.
Green: Independence.
White: Religion.
5. The Shield
The flag of Mexico has a shield on the white section,
which depicts an eagle devouring a snake while on a
cactus.
This has an Aztec origin. The legends say that the
wandering Aztecs thought that the gods would send them
a signal when they got to where they should establish their
city. So when they reached a lake and saw an isle in the
middle, upon which an eagle posed on a cactus was
devouring a snake, a sign foretold by their priests, they
stayed there and founded Tenochtitlan.
