300 yrs ago, Robert Hooke built a microscope and used it to look at cork. He saw what looked like small openings, which reminded him of small rooms (cells). Cellula in Latin means small rooms. Cell theory is based on observations made by three different scientists: Schleiden, Schwann, & Virchow.
