Editor's Notes
Do you ever feel like things are changing so rapidly that the future is now becoming the present… ?
Yes, Things have changed!Typewriter vs. computer
It may seem like you are going through way more changes than ever before… and that may be true… but keep in mind that change has been a part of our lives forever… you might think that all those who are younger than us didn’t have to endure change… but that just isn’t the case. Here is an example. When I was growing up there were rotary phones, then corded, then cordless, and now we don’t have a home phone. We went from the very first cell phone being a “bag phone” to a bulky phone, to tiny and basic, to fancy and elaborate. My first usage on a computer was on an IBM. We ran DOS code and basically all we had were number munchers and the ability to type. Then oregon trail came out! Wow! And now… My point is that all people, all generations go through change. The key to surviving and better yet, thriving – is to be adaptable!
I think it is easy to feel like we are caught in a web or a spiral of change and to get overwhelmed…
You might find this to be a ridiculous metaphor to job searching and frustration levels… but if you have ever played Mario Brothers and been invested like we were as children – you know the disappointment in reaching the castle (i.e. job interview) and not finding the princess (i.e. the offer) there… sometimes we would get sad, sometimes we would stop playing the game, sometimes we would throw the remote at the tv and mom would ban us from the game, and sometimes – we just kept going and got to the next castle… and eventually – we WON the game!
In order to keep going (persevere) you have to figure out what motivates you… First of all, what is motivation? And second of all… what motivates you?
Now, to me, this seems like quite a motivator! I’d be paddling too! But stop and think for a moment… this person is motivated by fear… so they paddle really fast and try to avoid the fear… couple things could be happening here… the shark could really be approaching and thus you need to flee OR the shark could simply be looking for that next school of fish and maybe it would have found it if you weren’t so busy making a ruckus in the water… so you are expending energy trying to flee the shark (impending bad thing – bills that are unpaid, etc.) but you end up paddling away from shore! So, by the time you figure out that the shark isn’t really interested in you (that fearful situation worked itself out) you are also figuring out that you now have a lot more work to do to return to where you REALLY wanted to go. Sure, you might have averted the thing you were afraid of, but at what cost? It takes you longer to get to your REAL goal…. Like getting a job or providing for your family, or living that dream… be careful to let fear be the thing that motivates you… it will wear you out – and then you may be left with little energy to pursue the thing that should be your biggest motivator!
For many of us – my guess is that our first thought is money – a paycheck – a way to pay the bills… but what does that mean? What does money give you?
If money was in your first couple thoughts – toward the top of your list… think about what money gets you? Why is money important? Time, family, peace, no worries, contentment, happiness, ability to donate, to travel, to have fun, to build your purpose in life…
Just when the caterpillar thought it’s world was over, it became a butterfly.
What is used to take to get a job… a strong back and an alarm clockI hear this a lot… “It used to be easy”
It’s all about choices…
The most successful job seekers are those that know the rules and that use that knowledge to their advantage, those that persevere, that continue to learn and strive for self-improvement…
Your life, and your job search, can be equated to a mirror… look in it… what do you see? Do you see a successful person? Do you see someone who is working hard? Who isn’t giving up? Who maintains a good attitude? If not… what are you doing about it?
Let’s take a moment to think about your job search? Are you doing the things you need to do to be successful? I’m checking my email, I’m looking in the paper, I’m filling out applications… is that enough??
I was surprised at how little time I had when I was unemployed… I think the saying is true – if you don’t treat your job search like a job, you probably won’t get one…. Or it will take longer… How are you allocating your time?” Are you doing enough with your time? Are you devoting too much of your time to something and not your job search? Are you wasting your time?
Walt Disney has hauled in billions from merchandise, movies and theme parks around the world. However, Walt Disney had a rough start. Disney founded a number of businesses that didn’t last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. Harland David Sanders aka Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken had a difficult time selling his chicken at first.
It is imperative to have a sturdy support system. Having a strong social support system helps people become more resilient in the face of life’s surprises.During a flood fire ants will stay together as a unit and float. In less than two minutes the entire colony will coalesce into a watertight, pancake-shaped raft by grasping onto one another using their mandibles, claws and adhesive pads on the ends of their legs. These rafts can sometimes be composed of thousands of ants linked together and floating sometimes for months. These ants rely heavily on each member of their colony for support and offers support when life throws a curve ball their way.Ensure that your support system is comprised of individuals who won’t hesitate to latch on to you and offer timely support as you float atop the unforeseen floods of life!
The key -- that will drive your car of life to places where talent and skill cannot take you! Good attitude will help you -- to be better equipped to handle the rigors of life
