Stock characters
In our film ‘The Betrayal’ there is no specific villain as we
decided that everyone would be a villain in there own way so
that there is no bias opinions within the audience.
The three main characters in our film are all hit men so this is the
most important stock character. At the beginning of our film we
have made it so the hit men seem like your stereotypical hit men
that don’t care about anyone but themselves, however there is a
twist which may surprise the audience which is that Darren, one
of the hit men is trying to find his mate Steve as he fears for his
life.
3. Stock narrative
We have made revenge our main theme in ‘the betrayal’ as we
thought that we would not have one main hero in order to make
the film more interesting and captivating for the audience.
There is kidnapping involved in our film as it adds to the action
and stems the idea that there may be a victim in our film which
later on deceives the audience as they find out he is anything but
a victim.
Stock setting
We decided that we would use the a parking lot as it is a dimmed
area and can add to the thrill for the audience as Darren could
be anywhere awaiting Mark’s arrival to murder him.
Iconography
We have used the stereotypical items which represent hit men in
order for the audience to be able to anticipate there personalities
and can conjure up an idea of what is in stall for them within the
film.
These items consist of guns, suits, mass etc as they are likely to
make it obvious of they type of characters the audience are
dealing with in the film.
4. Film comparison
I decided to do my textual analysis on ‘Lucky number slevin’ as
like our film ‘the betrayal’ it is a film set around the theme
revenge.
This influenced our film by giving us he idea of using darkness
and isolation to add tot the suspense as we have one scene
which is very similar to one in ‘Lucky number slevin’. This is the
scene in a parking lot where a man is walking to his car and is
shot, however before this they built up the suspense by using
camera angles such as point of views (P.O.V). This made it
hard to tell if whether or not someone was actually lurking in the
shadows behind the man leading the audience into a false
sense of security. Due to our sufficient funds we were unable to
expand on this idea so we cut it down to fit our film, however we
still had the aspects of the murder and a man hiding and
waiting.
It is also gave us a better idea of how are characters can be
portrayed and how they perceive the idea of revenge. This is
due to the fact that in ‘lucky number slevin’ the whole film is
plotted around revenge and we believed we could do it as well
by making it about someone who is set on murdering another.
We used roughly the same type of weapons that was used in
‘lucky number slevin’ which was guns this is because it is
stereotypically associated with hit men.
