Congruent with my status as a PhD student, I was an Assistant Professor in the professional writing minor program at Concordia. I had been asked by the department chair to update the course offerings. The courses were basically rooted in mid to late 20th century writing practices, with the bulk of the content being highly irrelevant, and more academic than practical. Having prior experience designing a social media component during my time teaching at Penn State, I was eager to get started; however, introducing social media is problematic in Quebec, primarily because Privacy Laws protect students having to participate in web 2.0 environments, to safeguard students from undergoing U.S. State surveillance. For this reason, I decided to run a study to determine how an instructional design could be effective and at the same time non-mandatory? The study took place over a four-year period from 2012-2016, involved 3 iterations of a yearlong course, and was followed by a retrospective analysis, which included a survey of participants 1-2 and 3 years after the course.

This paper reports the findings of a Stage I meta-analysis exploring the effectiveness of online digital literacy practices performed through social media tools in higher education classrooms as measured by learning outcomes. An extensive literature search culled more than 500 potential articles and resulted in a sample of 51 representative quasi-experimental studies, consisting of 4,630 total participants. Fifty-one effect sizes were extracted and yielded a moderately positive statistically significant weighted average effect size of g+ = 0.315, k=51, p <. 01. This overall effect size suggests that integrating online digital literacy practices into the higher education classroom benefits students on measures of academic achievement and offers significant learning support. In addition, several moderator variables were tested to determine what factors and literacy practices impact learning outcomes; namely, field of study (STEM, ARTS), conceptualization of tool (social learning theory, delivery tool), peer interaction (yes, no), modality (blogs, collaborative communication text-based technologies, i.e. forums and wikis; podcasts, and virtual worlds), practice (consuming, prosuming behaviors), and the learning outcome measured (course project, knowledge-based exam); moderator effect sizes were statistically significant for the following variables: conceptualization of the tool, practice, and learning outcomes.

Abstract: In recent years, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies expanded to many areas directly affecting the lives of millions. AI-based approaches advise human decision-makers who should be released on bail, whether it is a good time to discharge a patient from a hospital and whether a specific student is at risk to fail a course. Such extensive use in AI in decision making came with a range of protentional problems that have been extensively studied over the last few years. Recognition of these problems motivated a rapid rise of research on “human-centered AI”, which attempted to address and minimize the negative effects of using AI technologies. The majority of work on human-centered AI focus on various types of Human-AI collaboration through such technologies as transparency, explainability, and user control. In my talk, I will review how the ideas of Human-AI collaboration, transparency, explainability, and user control have been used in educational applications of AI in the past and will discuss now new ideas in this research area developed outside of AI-Ed could be creatively applied in educational context.

Effects of social interactions are reported in research on higher education to lead to positive outcomes such as higher levels of internalization, sense of community, academic achievement, metacognition, and student retention. The role of social networks has especially been emphasized in research due to the availability of theoretical foundations and analytic methods to investigate their effects in higher education. The increased use of technologies in education allows for the collection of large and rich datasets about social networks which call for the use of novel analytics methods. This talk will first give a brief overview of the existing work on and lessons learned from some well-known studies on social networks in higher education in diverse situations from face-to-face to massive open online courses. The talk will then identify critical challenges that require immediate attention in order for the study of social networks to make a sustainable impact on learning and teaching. The most important take away from the talk will be that - computational aspects of the study of social networks need to be integrated deeply with theory, research and practice, - novel methods for the study of critical dimensions (discourse, structure and dynamics) that shape network formation and network effects are necessary, and - innovative instructional approaches are essential to address the changing conditions created by contemporary educational and technological contexts.

The University of the Roller Coaster How can Higher Education function in a world struggling to save itself from climate change, pandemics and war? How can it drive innovation and shape the future as the pace of technological change constantly increases? How can it re-invent itself to respond imaginatively to the new challenges facing humanity? We are living in an uncertain, unpredictable world with no “back to normal” any more. So, how can we re-imagine higher education when nothing can be taken for granted? What kind of technologies can help universities to adapt? What lessons can we learn from recent successes and failures? What 'best practice' examples point the way into the future? How can we shape the development of institutions, so that they are neither “ivory towers” nor “competence factories"? How can we encourage future-oriented universities in which both pedagogy and research are fit for the challenges ahead? In the Academic Plenary, our experts will examine the threats and opportunities facing higher education today and ask how we can design new approaches that prepare staff and students to thrive in the University of the Roller Coaster.
