2. Introduction
At Retina Associates, a major Tucson, Arizona-
based eye care practice, Dr. Cameron Javid treats
patients with conditions ranging in severity from
floaters to eye cancers. Retina Associates

Valley.
As people age, sometimes they notice small,
blurry, and gray or black specks that appear in
their fields of vision. These specks seem to “float”
from place to place or dart away as a person
attempts to focus on them.
Floaters themselves are harmless and often go
unnoticed until they manifest in multiples.
3. Floaters
They’re caused when vitreous, a gel-like material
that supports the eye’s shape, shrinks into strands
that make shadows. The eye detects these
shadows, and the brain interprets them as grayish
smudges.
Since floaters rarely cause any problems, doctors
may recommend that they go untreated. However,
when floaters significantly interrupt vision, patients
may benefit from a special surgery to remove
them. Rarely, sudden onset of floaters represents
serious retina problems, including retinal tears or
retinal detachment.
