8. ”If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man
would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more
pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man."
Albert Einstein
10. Bees can't cope with pesticides but thrive in the city
The pollution from cars is filtered in the bee
Honey from bees in a city is 100% clean and pollution free

BikubeThere is a new buzz in town!
Today, I’m going to share my story on how we put B2B in to a new perspective.
But first I need to tell you a bit about my hometown Copenhagen.
Copenhagen has been in ICCAs top 20 for decades and offer EVERYHING a convention planner could ever dream of - apart from the weather maybe. To make sure people forget about the weather issue, we rather tell you that Copenhagen is ranked THE most livable city in the world, is home to THE happiest and most innovative people on the planet - and has been ranked world’s greenest and most sustainable city over and over again. Danes also have a reputation of being humble - but I’m Swedish so I’m allowed to brag a bit about the Danes - so to give you the full picture I have to add: We are also know as The Capital of Sustainable Meetings
This title has given us MASSIVE international publicity and speaking time in the industry which has been priceless and crucial in promoting Copenhagen. But - other destinations ALSO work on their sustainable portfolio! And let me be frank - some of them, might even offer a greener product than we do in Copenhagen – just check the other cities on the ICCA Scandinavian Sustainable Destination Index on the banneres here.
We are still the only destination around, that has a strong green portfolio and has show cased, that we can stage international mega events.
2 times first of it’s kind: COP 15 was… 30,000 nine days etc. EU was 100 meetings 80% in Copenhagen – cost reduction of 2/3 comapared to the former presidency in Poland etc.
We earned the titel Capital of Sustainable Meetings by eco-certifying international mega events and telling the world about it. Right now, we don’t have one such event in the pipeline. So what to do?We wanted to secure and expand Copenhagen’s position and generate business. And - and I might sound a bit like a saint now - but this is something I feel strongly about: with the titel Capital of Sustainable meetings comes an obligation! And that is one of the reasons to why I feel strondly about the ICCA Index – it helps push innovation, comitment etc. We can’t save the world just by staging green events in Copenhagen! So we also had a mission to create a GLOBAL BUZZ around sustainable meetings management.
We had some pretty big ambitions. Almost NO money. We wanted people to engage around something, that not even the politicians can really agree to take action on - the climate and sustainable solutions. So how do you communicate this issue in and relevant way? We had to find something that people could relate to. Something eye catching and likable. We wanted to take people by surprise! We decided to throw our love on this little guy:
Why? The bee might be small, but it fitted our big ambitions because.Let me tell you tell you 3 important facts about the bees. Bees are endangered. Crucial to the eco-system. And responsible for the pollination of at least 1/3 of the food we eat. That includes coffee, chocolate and champagne. I don’t know about you, but that convinced me - we HAVE to save them. Scientists around the globe agree on the bees’ importance and Albert Einstein once said:
If the bees die we have four years left to live. Or said in other words
If we die we take you with us! He looks pretty scared right - but you should be scared too :-)
The bee also has a connection to Copenhagen via the CRS project City Bee. In an attempt to protect the bee, they have placed 4,5 million bees around the city. Last year they harvested 5 tons of honey, with a taste of Copenhagen. Players in the Copenhagen meetings industry has supported the city bee project - We in the Copenhagen CVB have adopted 2 bee families in the city’s Botanical Gardens. We visited them the other week and they were thriving.
The good news is, that the majority of any sustaunable action also support the bees – organic food, planting and protecting green areas, trees and flowers, protecting water, reducing pollutuion etc.
While we are at it - the term CVB first unfolds it true potential when it’s combined with the call-to-action-title #BeeSustain!Prior to IMEX we teased for #BeeSustain in press releases, news letters and on social media. But the industry was in for a surprise. And I have to admit. It took me some time to convince my colleagues to go along with this part of the idea - but in the end - no one wanted to be the wannabee.
As you can see - this was not a question of to Bee or Not to Bee. And I know my boss, who is going to speak here tomorrow about how we have worked with the ICCA Scandinavian Sustainable Destination Index, loves the next picture:
and trust me - this brought along some true interaction!. And at the planting session they really digged in.
The meetings professionals buzzed around the Danish stand
A swarm of Danish exhibitors turned the meetings industry in to true BEElibers. Even our competitors joined in
It seems like this one forgot his stripes though. We were also blessed by a nun from a local monestery…
working with people on the edge of society. She collected the flower pots for the monestery garden.
Our press kits contained plantable information flyers
And we glued plantable #BeeSustain ribbons on IMEX name batches - the ribbons became very popular. We had a crowd of industry people humming around pollinating IMEX sharing our message.
And we tweeted.
And more importantly, YOU tweeted too - we had 448 contributors in the IMEX week alone. #BeeSustain still creates a buzz on social media and the latest figures show a total tweet reach of more than 1.7 million. Thank you!
I know, that many meetings professionals think that sustainable meetings management is boring, expensive and puts a limit to creativity and innovation. I hope I just showed you, that this does not have to be the case
And that my story has put a new perspective to Bee2Bee
I believe, that we should bee the change you want to see in the world. And I hope, that I have inspired you to ask youself the following question:
How will you BeeSustain? Will you serve organic food at your next event? Invite the delegates to a plating session? Provide conference bags made of organic fabrics? Sponsor local bee initiatives?
I have brought this ribbon today, inviting you to join us in the #BeeSustain movement. If you attach it to your EIBTM badge and tweet pictures of it during EIBTM – with the hashtag #BeeSustain we donate 50 cents to the Copenhagen City Bee project.
Join us, and create a BUZZ
