- 1. FAMILY ACCESS Parent Orientation Presented by: Peggy Hale Instructional Technology Specialist
- 2. What is Family Access? Family Access allows you to see your child’s information . . . schedule, grades, attendance, discipline, vaccination records, emergency contact information, test scores, etc.
- 3. Family Access Use • Available for 2nd – 12th grades • PK-1st grades have access to information, but not all of the gradebook features.
- 4. Family Access Use • Access to this parent technology is a privilege, not a right. • Parents/guardians held responsible for proper use of accounts • Use may be monitored • Access may be revoked if rules are violated
- 5. What is Inappropriate Use? 1. Using someone else’s account or accessing another individual’s records without permission. 2. Downloading or using copyrighted information without permission from the copyright holder. 3. Gaining or attempting to gain unauthorized access to restricted information or resources.
- 6. Procedure for Family Access 1. Parent Orientation Meeting 2. Complete application form 3. Return form in person to one of the campuses in which your child(ren) attends. A picture ID is required at that time. 4. Once approved, you will receive an e-mail with your username and password.
- 18. Lists all assignments from all classes that are considered missing!
- 20. What does an * mean? The grade has not been posted in the gradebook! • An * does NOT affect the average • A “zero” DOES affect the average • Skyward makes an assignment missing 5 days after the due date.
- 21. An asterisk . . . what now? What to do if I see an * in the gradebook: 1. Look at the due date! 2. If the due date was 8/21/11 and today is 8/22/11, chances are the teacher hasn’t graded the assignment …check back. 3. If the due date was 8/21/11 and today is 9/5/11, ask your child about the missing grade…was it completed, was it turned in?
- 22. An asterisk . . . what now? Always check with your child FIRST! • Please keep in the mind the length of time that may be needed to grade an assignment. • For example, a research paper will take longer to grade and record than a worksheet might!

An asterisk . . . what now? • Many teachers enter a 0 for a missing assignment rather than leaving it as an * so the resulting student average reflects the actual grade in the event the assignment is not completed and/or turned in! • Once the assignment is turned in and graded, the 0 will be changed to the actual grade if the work was made up within the time allowed by the teacher!
- 26. GPAs are posted for grades 11 & 12 and will be calculated using the last ranking…it is not a daily GPA!
- 27. Comments written by teacher is for the six weeks grading period.
- 52. FAMILY ACCESS Family Access can serve as a tool to communicate grading and attendance concerns with your child. Having a discussion with your child may answer many of your questions and save a phone call.
- 53. CONTACT INFORMATION Contact Attendance Clerk for changes to demographic information or attendance. Contact Teacher for questions about grades.

- Parent Orientation MeetingComplete application form (print neatly on email’s: making sure 1’s and L’s are legible_ O’s and 0’s give problems.Return form in personto one of the campuses in which your child(ren) attends. - Skyward’s username and password that are sent to you are long and meant for you to change.Parent has control of the username and password once it’s given out. Change password if you need to keep someone you shared with out of it.Ability to change email if necessary.

- Under General Information, parents can search through many topics. Let’s look at the student’s information first.
- Emergency Contacts included here; Any medical alert or pick-up restrictions found here.Contact us: emails the attendance clerk of an absence, sickness, family emergency, etc.
- Where a majority of your time will be spent!
- Grades are not final until Report cards are printed. Students may have submitted assignments that have not yet been graded and/or recorded by the teacher. Legend is included to help with codes above the grades.Retake this screenshot: Shows teachers who left the district
- Clicking on an underlined blue grade (hyperlink) and it will take you to the assignments that make up that grade. Let’s check out this grade:90
- The grade of 90 is a result of 10 daily assignments and 2 major tests.Clicking on a certain assignment gives parents more details about the assignment. Teachers have been asked to be specific on the assignment so that a parent can search online for help and assistance according to the topic.
- Class Assignment Summary: shows that the 73 was the average score. Lowest score was a 46, however the highest score was a 94! Gives a clearer picture of where your child scored in relation to the entire class.
- Assignments are considered missing 5 days after teacher’s due date of assignment. Student may have already turned in assignment, but teacher has not graded it, or has not entered grade in gradebook yet. - Seeing an asterisk on the assignment means that it is missing, but not figured into the grade average.Hide Teacher’s name

- Not all teachers choose to use codes for assignments in Skyward, but these are available.

- GPAs are posted for grades 9-12 and will be calculated using the last ranking…it is not a daily GPA, but is only posted twice a year; once in the fall and once in the spring.
- Comments written by teacher is for the six weeks grading period.
- Teachers have a choice to post messages for class and can attach documents for parents.Parents should check for messages in each class on Family Access. Learn your teacher’s habits.
- You can see when you have a message and can click the hyperlink to view it.
- Parents then have the option to post a reply to the message and hide the responses.
- Attendance under General Information
- Color coded; legend shown at top; helps parents know when to turn in doctors’ or dentists’ notices to be excused.There are several options to View attendance…
- Clicking on the date, gives you a detailed record. Upper grades gives report for each period.
- Schedule under General Information is handy to print and post for a handy reference
- Helps parents choose the best time to take students out of class and helps locate the Room number if you have scheduled a conference.Take New Screenshot
- Discipline under General Information
- Gives parents the offense action that was taken.
- Graduation Requirements under General Information
- It lists the credits required to graduate, shows the ones in progress, and the ones remaining. If you click “Show Courses” you can see the courses that have been taken with grades, or the one that is in progress.

- Test Scores under General Information
- TAKs scores to show improvement through the years.
- Food Service under General Information
- Option to make credit card payment which goes into child’s account instantly! Keeps track of payments and allows parents to view purchases…
- Parents can monitor students nutritious choices for lunch and/or breakfast.
- Access Report Cards with option to print if desired.Set-up e-mail notifications as follows . . .
- Click the “Change My Notifications” button and click in the box in order to receive daily attendance notifications for your student(s).Food Service balance notification when under $5.00Grades – set the low and/or high score to be notifiedProgress Reports-daily, weekly, or monthly (you choose)

- Only vaccination records are included at this time.
- Login History under General Information
- A record of your visits online is recorded and can be viewed in the login history section. This shows the exact time, date, and what information was viewed.
