Nitrogen can be used as an effective fire suppression system by reducing the oxygen concentration in the air. It is chemically inert, odorless, and safe for humans in moderate concentrations around 16-19% oxygen. Nitrogen systems work by releasing nitrogen gas to dilute the air below the 15% oxygen level needed to sustain combustion. These systems have benefits of being environmentally friendly without harming property or health when used correctly.

green-house effect is nil and its ozone layer depletion potential is zero.
• It is chemically inert, non-conductive, colourless, odourless and
flavourless.
• Nitrogen suppression systems are based on the principle of reducing the
oxygen concentration to a specific level.
• Additional nitrogen (lower oxygen) cannot be detected by the sense of
smell.
• However, nitrogen is safe to breath only if it is mixed with an appropriate
amount of oxygen.

8. Why is fire extinguished with Nitrogen?
Continuous combustion requires more than 15% of oxygen
concentration by volume. The NN100 system will suppress a
fire by reducing the oxygen concentration down to 12.5% with
nitrogen gas discharged.
