sounddelivery was invited to deliver a series of social media workshops at the recent Museums Association 09 conference in London. We also ran a workshop in partnership with the Museum of London focusing on social inclusion through media projects. This case study explored a series of social-inclusion projects that have used video, podcasts and blogs to encourage accessibility, and shows the benefits to the participants as well as to the museum. If you need further information about this kind of work or links to the audio please do get in touch jude@sounddelivery.org.uk

Cultural diversity is a fact of life, especially at the University of Surrey where over 30% of our students originate from over 130 different countries. The concept of a ‘Cultural Academy’ was born from a concern and a belief that we could do more to learn from our cultural diversity. Cultural Academy is not part of the formal curriculum but a process, founded on the idea of appreciative enquiry that requires voluntary participation from both students and staff. Through a series of workshops, planning meetings and a student-led conference extending over five months, participants (students, facilitators and mentors) shared their experiences and understandings of culture and its influences on their lives. Infrastructures to support learning included an on-line social networking space to encourage conversation and the recording and sharing of experience , a mentoring scheme to support and encourage learning and to validate learning, a new learning through experience award to value and recognise the learning, a wiki to support the production and accumulation of knowledge gained through enquiry. Various pedagogic processes within the learning process will be explored at the presentation.

Finding and selecting OER to adopt at your college can raise questions about both the quality and accessibility of the content for your students. Join us for this webinar to hear about best practices and rubrics developed to ensure that OER content meets instructional material standards, accessibility guidelines, and open licensing policies established at your institution. These rubrics assist faculty, librarians, instructional designers and other staff to select and adapt open educational resources that meet student needs regardless of disability but are also culturally relevant and engaging for students at your institution and can be freely re-used, re-mixed, and re-distributed. When: Wed, May 10, at 10am PT/ 1pm ET Featured Speakers: Lori Catallozzi, Dean of Humanities and Learning Communities, Bunker Hill Community College, MA will share promising practices for designing digital open educational resources that are culturally relevant and engaging for students. Paula Michniewicz, Instructional Designer, Salt Lake Community College, UT will share best practices for evaluating digital open educational resources for meeting Section 508/ADA standards and guidelines for Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Quill West, OER Project Manager, Pierce College District, WA will share best practices for ensuring the proper vetting and attribution of open educational resources.

While many museums are working to improve access for people with physical and cognitive disabilities, most are still struggling to offer opportunities for learning, social engagement, and creativity or worse doing nothing. How do we provide access for all on limited budgets? Presenters discuss how technology, collaborative strategies, and programs can be used and developed to serve visitors with physical-access challenges, memory loss, and other developmental and intellectual disabilities.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
