1. Graph Words Vocabulary Builder
Students can visit www.graphwords.com and enter their list of either teacher
selected or self-selected vocabulary terms. The graph words site then generates
a list of synonyms for each word. This virtual word map can either be printed or
drawn onto paper for classroom display in order to develop a better
understanding of the terms associated with any given topic. Be sure to enter
words prior to assigning them in order to ensure quality vocabulary building and
escape possible misbehavior due to some of the synonyms that may be
generated. As students hover over each word, a definition and pronunciation is
then provided. There is also the option of developing a list of antonyms
associated with each vocabulary term.
Visual Thesaurus
www.visualthesaurus.com is another site that offers synonyms, antonyms, parts
of speech, and definitions for relevant vocabulary terms that are either assigned
or self-selected.
Wordle
www.wordle.com is a site where students can enter a list of vocabulary or
spelling words and then design and create a collage using those words.
Crossword Puzzles
There are several sites available for using vocabulary terms and definitions to
create a crossword puzzle that can be shared with classmates as an informal
assessment. www.discoverypuzzlemaker.com is one of the available sites.
Word Search
Word Searches are another supplement to be used with vocabulary activities.
