Focused is better. You can dance around, but make sure you always dance around the central topic.

Memorize your slides.
Find a good balance.Err toward the fast side. You’ll probably go a bit faster during the actual presentation.
Make sure the information is digestible. No walls of text.
What do you think when you’re going through the slides? Think about a fail whale? Put it on there, people will think like you want to.

Work on getting back to your topic from a tangent. Either be direct/abrupt or segway through some related information.
Don’t use them as a crutch. If you can’t sell it with passion sans slides, you won’t be able to do it with slides.
Again, you HAVE to think about the audience.
Watch good presentations. TED (http://ted.com) and other conferences like PDC (http://microsoftpdc.com/Videos) have great presenters all the time. A lot of their videos and slides are available online.WWDC isn’t as friendly to the general public.
