How does it work?
• Twitter lets you write and read messages of up to 140
characters, or the very length of this sentence, including all
punctuation and spaces.
• We recommend keeping tweets to 120 characters. This
makes it easier for others to interact with you.
• Messages are known as “tweets” and are public, unless
you adjust your privacy settings.
• When you choose to follow an account, you will begin
receiving that person/business’s tweets in your live feed.

Twitter Lingo
• To follow somebody is to subscribe to their messages
• A tweet is an individual message
• A DM or direct message is a private message on Twitter
• RT or retweet is to repost a valuable message from somebody
else on Twitter and give them credit
• Trending topics are the most-discussed terms on Twitter at
any given moment

Twitter Lingo
• @username is a public message to or about an
individual on Twitter
• Shortened URLs. To fit links into the short messages,
Twitter shrinks some URLs down automatically
• A hashtag—the # symbol followed by a term and
included in tweets—is a way of categorizing all the
posts on a topic

Hashtags Demystified
• Hashtags are linked
• When users click on “#FSA10”, they will be redirected
to a feed that includes all tweets that mention
“#FSA10”
• This includes tweets of people you do NOT follow
as well as those you do
• Make sure that you do not include spaces or
punctuation if you want a term to be a linkable
hashtag.

• It is more than just blasting informational updates:
• Engage with conference attendees
• If you see someone post an interesting quote from a
session, RT it!
• Post pictures & videos from the conference
• Answer attendee questions
• Encourage post conference dialogue
• Get conference feedback

How to follow a user
• Go to the profile of the user and click the follow button.
• The users tweets will now appear in your live feed.
Sidenote: This blue check
indicates a “verified account”.

Follow relevant accounts
• Following somebody means you’ve
subscribed to their tweets
• To find people talking about your
company or topics in your field, use
search.twitter.com
• When you find a good candidate, look
under their picture for the Follow
button
• You can also choose to interact
without following an account, just send
them a tweet

Shortening urls
Because you only have 140 characters to get your message out,
it is necessary to shorten urls when including them in tweets.
In addition to giving you more space for content, by shortening
urls, you are also able to track click-through rates on services
such as bit.ly

Retweeting
If you find someone’s tweet interesting and want to share it with your
followers, Retweet it! You have two options:
1) RT @FSAconf [copy and paste tweet]
2) Use the Retweet Button

This option allows
you to add
commentary before
the retweet!

@ Mentions & Replies
• To address a specific user (to ask a question, respond or make a
comment) include @username at the beginning of your tweet.
• This tweet will be public, but will only show up on your handle
page and will appear in the live feeds of those who follow both
you and the mentioned user.
• Additionally, if someone wants to converse with you publicly on
twitter, they will do that using @username at the beginning of the
tweet.
• @FAFSA I am 21 and live on my own. Does that make me
dependent?

@ Mentions & Replies
• Often times if people want to mention or refer to you in a
tweet the will use @username
• Ex: I just ate at @FoundingFarmers and it was
amazing!
• Users are able to click on the mention and are then
brought to the users twitter page
• When someone “mentions” you, it will show up in the @
replies section of your twitter page. Be sure to keep an
eye on it so that you can respond.

Deleting a Tweet
• It is very important to thoroughly proofread everything
you post on twitter.
• There is an option to delete a tweet if you realized you
made a mistake.
• While it will be removed from your twitter page, it is
possible that it will still show up in the live feeds of your
followers.
• Therefore, if you make a mistake, after you delete the
tweet, send a folllow -up tweet to clarify the info.

Best practices
• Build relationships on Twitter
• Listen for comments about you
• Respond to comments and queries
• Ask questions
• Post links to things people would find interesting
• Retweet messages you would like to share
• Use a friendly, casual tone
• Don’t spam people

• Leverage the real-time nature of Twitter
• Ask questions, float ideas, solicit feedback – and expect fast
feedback most of the time
• If you’ve launched a product, new store or new campaign,

is dealing with

• Measure the value of Twitter
• Before setting up measurement tools, focus on the quality of
your engagement: do a gut-check of how things are going
