History
Southern North Sea Basin has produced around 43.4 trillion
cubic feet (tcf) of gas from 123 gas fields by year end of
2009.
Some 856 exploration and appraisal wells led to the
discoveries of :
 Rotliegen play 8337 Mboe
 Triassic play 883 Mboe
 Carboniferous play 726 Mboe
 Exploration begin in 1960’s with the discovery of
Groningen gas field

Tectonic Setting
The North Sea was the site of a triple plate collision zone during
the Caledonian orogeny
The extension of Caledonian Orogeny initiated the rift basins
Early Devonian saw extensional tectonic regime forming a series
of graben
Variscan Orogeny compression cause the inversion and erosion
Rifiting reactivated in Triassic – Jurassic
The inversion and erosion in Cretaceous – Teritary resulted in
thining and onlap of the Chalk
