Artificial Intelligence
1. Key Points.
Artificial intelligence is a program which makes a computer behave as if it had a form
of intelligence.
An expert system is a program that has access to a large database of knowledge about
one particular subject.
It can draw conclusions, make decisions and offer advice based on that knowledge.
It is called an expert system as in some sense it had the same intelligence of a human.
The parts of the expert system are the knowledge base, the interference engine, and
the explanatory interface.
The knowledge base contains facts and rules.
The interface engine or expert shell system is the program.
The explanatory is used to ask the question of the user.
The purpose of an expert system is to contain the knowledge of a human expert and to
be able to represent and describe this knowledge in a useful way.
The applications of the experts systems are many and varied. These include medicine,
geology, chemistry and engineering.
The advantages of expert systems are that they;
Can be copied many times
Are always accessible
Are consistent in their decision making
Contain knowledge from more than one person
Can save money by allowing unskilled workers to perform complex tasks
Can provide an impersonal source of advice
The disadvantages of expert systems are that they;
Are expensive to create
Cannot skip steps or use common sense like humans
My lack depth of knowledge
Are inflexible
Do not have common sense
May contain mistakes
Social issues of experts of expert systems include deskilling
Legal issues of expert systems include blame and compensation claims
Ethical issues of expert systems examine whether or not vital decisions should be left
to machines.
