What do we Lose in the new Maps?
"During our design process, we were super aggressive…
We would ask ourselves, 'What would we design if we could
only keep 20% of Maps' features?'”
Jonah Jones – Lead Designer for Google Maps
1. Number of route destinations - Originally just 2 in the New Maps, (now
10) but still fewer than the many more allowed before.
2.Route place custom titles in parenthesis (This also made it
easy to comment stops on a route.)
3.Better Page/Tab titles based on map content
4.Easy to find menus and more display options
5.Load speed
6.Undo (remove) of route changes by drag
7.Dozens more listed at: https://goo.gl/09bT16

Who owns the World?
Or at least our information about it?
"Google, TomTom, and Nokia HERE keep
getting listed as the three spatial data
sources available. Why do we forget the
fourth one? The one most transparent to the
audience, the one we all own and work on
together? What about OpenStreetMap?"
https://mapzen.com/blog/openstreetmap-and-the-fourth-wall
Perhaps if more of us used and contributed to
OpenStreetMap, companies like Google will find it
harder to “pull the rug out from under us” so to speak.
The Classic Maps Labs Drop LatLng Marker tool worked to
find short coordinates. Markers remain on the next search.
Using Google Maps JavaScript API
I made a custom map for finding short coordinates
http://maps.890m.com/
This was rather difficult as creating the web page, UI and
controls, help, etc., required learning a lot of HTML, CSS,
JavaScript, as well as some developer tools and hosting options.
What is a Mashup?
“Since Google published its Maps API, numerous applications, called mash-ups, have
been developed that integrate customized data on top of Google's map interface.”
http://www.javaworld.com/article/2071820/data-storage/a-google-maps-mash-up.html
“A mashup, in web development, is a web page, or web application, that uses
content from more than one source to create a single new service displayed
in a single graphical interface. For example, you could combine the
addresses and photographs of your library branches with a Google map to
create a map mashup.”

Sample Usage: IMPORTHTML(A2,B2,C2)
IMPORTHTML("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_India","table",4)
Syntax: IMPORTHTML(url, query, index)
url - The URL of the page to examine, including protocol (e.g. http://).
The value for url must either be enclosed in quotation marks or be a reference to a cell containing the appropriate text.
query - Either "list" or "table" depending on what type of structure contains the desired data.
index - The index, starting at 1, which identifies which table or list as defined in the HTML source should be returned.
The indices for lists and tables are maintained separately, so there may be both a list and a table with index 1 if
both types of elements exist on the HTML page.

What is an API?
“An application-programming interface (API) is a set of programming instructions
and standards for accessing a Web-based software application or Web tool. A
software company releases its API to the public so that other software developers
can design products that are powered by its service.” “An API is a software-to-
software interface, not a user interface.”

I started by downloading the html source code of map examples and making minor tweaks. I
quickly discovered that my old editors (Notepad, Crimson Editor, etc.) were not as useful as
some of the newer alternatives. I'm still looking for a nice free alternative to Dreamweaver, but
Firefox's Scratchpad was a step up from editors with only syntax highlighting features.

Microsoft's free Web IDE Visual Studio Code identified more bugs.

This was more helpful in identifying typos or mistakes in my code.

I have yet to try some of the Chrome IDE tools:

One way to get started is to follow this tutorial:
Amit Agarwal's 1-click Website Hosting Google Drive script
http://www.labnol.org/internet/host-website-on-google-drive/28178/
Once you have a “My Website” folder shared publicly, you can create additional pages
and edit them with the Google Drive app HTML Editey, however you can not use
relative links to css, images, or JavaScript files this way.
It is not necessary to use Amit Agarwal's script if you add the Editey components to
Google Drive. Then you can right-click on any folder in Google Drive and open that
folder with Create... Public Website. (Do not use a folder containing private
documents!) Relative links will work in such a folder for images etc. as long as you use
the folder ID instead of the file ID for your URL.
Google Drive folder open in Editey
Notice the warnings that pop up when you mouse over the /! icon on the left.
Are Google's new maps a sign of
Mobilegeddon?
I fear in the enthusiasm to embrace more popular mobile web usage, rich
desktop web content is facing a future “Armageddon”. As of 4/21/2015
Google is placing mobile websites higher than desktop web sites in page
rank, favoring simple presentation over rich content.
This may be the beginning of a dumbing down of the Internet!

Who owns theWorld? Or at least our information about it? "Google, TomTom, and Nokia HERE keep getting listed as the three spatial data sources available. Why do we forget the fourth one? The one most transparent to the audience, the one we all own and work on together? What about OpenStreetMap?" https://mapzen.com/blog/openstreetmap-and-the-fourth-wall Perhaps if more of us used and contributed to OpenStreetMap, companies like Google will find it harder to “pull the rug out from under us” so to speak.

The value for url must either be enclosed in quotation marks or be a reference to a cell containing the appropriate text. query - Either "list" or "table" depending on what type of structure contains the desired data. index - The index, starting at 1, which identifies which table or list as defined in the HTML source should be returned. The indices for lists and tables are maintained separately, so there may be both a list and a table with index 1 if both types of elements exist on the HTML page. https://support.google.com/docs/answer/3093339 How to Import Web Data into Google Docs http://www.labnol.org/internet/import-html-in-google-docs/28125/

Most Map exampleswill load from a local file for experimentaion. file:///C:/html/shortgps.html I started by downloading the html source code of map examples and making minor tweaks. I quickly discovered that my old editors (Notepad, Crimson Editor, etc.) were not as useful as some of the newer alternatives. I'm still looking for a nice free alternative to Dreamweaver, but Firefox's Scratchpad was a step up from editors with only syntax highlighting features. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Scratchpad Microsoft's free Web IDE Visual Studio Code identified more bugs. http://code.visualstudio.com This was more helpful in identifying typos or mistakes in my code. See also: http://pete.akeo.ie/2014/11/visual-studio-2013-has-now-become.html I have yet to try some of the Chrome IDE tools: http://www.chromebookhq.com/five-best-online-ides-making-the-switch-to-a-chromebook/ I also tried Google Web Designer, but found it confusing and oriented more toward visual ad content creation than coding. https://www.google.com/webdesigner/ Here is a simple Google Map generated in Google Web Designer and hosted in a Google Drive folder: https://googledrive.com/host/0B1MlRTjWL3RRZS10MFhKYmxnNm8/index.html I also looked at Google Apps Script, but did not find it intuitive to use. Hosting Web pageson Google Drive See: http://help.editey.com/en/user.html#installation http://help.editey.com/en/index.html https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/floreysoft/zXi7cimxwuY Use this template URL to view an individual self-contained web page on Google Drive https://googledrive.com/host/<Google-Drive-FILE-ID> e.g. https://googledrive.com/host/0B1MlRTjWL3RRVGNES0Z4TXh3alE One way to get started is to follow this tutorial: Amit Agarwal's 1-click Website Hosting Google Drive script http://www.labnol.org/internet/host-website-on-google-drive/28178/ Once you have a “My Website” folder shared publicly, you can create additional pages and edit them with the Google Drive app HTML Editey, however you can not use relative links to css, images, or JavaScript files this way. It is not necessary to use Amit Agarwal's script if you add the Editey components to Google Drive. Then you can right-click on any folder in Google Drive and open that folder with Create... Public Website. (Do not use a folder containing private documents!) Relative links will work in such a folder for images etc. as long as you use the folder ID instead of the file ID for your URL.

Are Google's newmaps a sign of Mobilegeddon? I fear in the enthusiasm to embrace more popular mobile web usage, rich desktop web content is facing a future “Armageddon”. As of 4/21/2015 Google is placing mobile websites higher than desktop web sites in page rank, favoring simple presentation over rich content. This may be the beginning of a dumbing down of the Internet! https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/ https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/mobile-seo/configurations/responsive-design <meta name="viewport" content="width=device- width, initial-scale=1.0"> @media all and (orientation: landscape) { /* Target device in landscape mode */ } @media all and (orientation: portrait) { /*Target device in portrait mode*/ } http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/04/responsive-design- harnessing-power-of.html (Nice examples of breakpoints)

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Like many others I used Classic Google Maps for 99% of my online map related needs, until Google announced they were improving it by removing features I rely on.
  • #4 Loosing my favorite route planner has raised the question: What is the best tool for planning a route?
  • #9 I consider the New Google Maps a giant step backwards in terms of user friendliness. I am not alone in frustration with the hidden nature of menus that don&amp;apos;t appear unless you know the secret place to mouse over and reveal them.
  • #10 But these 3D effects also work in Classic Google Maps, so why not keep Classic Google Maps?
  • #11 But these 3D effects also work in Classic Google Maps, so why not keep Classic Google Maps?
  • #12 Pronounce baobab bay-o-bab.
  • #13 The &amp;output=classic argument stopped working in early May of 2015, but as of late May dropping the last “c” still works. At this time all menus providing a return to Classic Google Maps were removed as well.
  • #14 Use an Internet search engine to find many more “alternatives to New Google maps”. In my searches for obscure features, I&amp;apos;ve identified some gems you might not easily locate, or be familiar with.
  • #21 If you like maps, check out many other beautiful examples at Stamen.com!
  • #26 Halfway point – suggest a bio/streatch break
  • #35 Garmin also has free software (BaseCamp™ and HomePort™) for download at: http://www.garmin.com/us/maps/trip_planning_software
  • #36 I think storing favorite routes in a spreadsheet has a lot of potential.
  • #37 Rand McNally should not be overlooked or forgotten among all the newcomers to mapping. For four or more destinations they provide one of the nicer route optimizers.
  • #39 I like how easy this site makes showing all the rest areas along a route.
  • #41 This is an attempt to preserve many of the features of Classic Google Maps on top of the new maps.
  • #44 On road trips I find it easiest to keep my destination and one intermediate waypoint at a time in my GPS. Many addresses come out differently in different mapping services, so I quickly discovered my GPS could not find many addresses that Google could. My solution was to use latitude and longitude coordinates which always work in my GPS. The problem was that getting a location from Google Maps always resulted in a lot of extra digits that were dangerous to type in while driving. That&amp;apos;s when I started trying to find short coordinates near enough to places I wanted to stop.
  • #45 It took maybe 12-16 lines of code to add what I wanted to a Google map. The code to make the overall map and web page robust is closer to 500 lines!
  • #48 How do I hyperlink a cell with address info to Google Map of that address? https://productforums.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!category-topic/docs/how-do-i/BlPr3V-EQ9g
