  • 1. Gas is a phase of matter because...
    • Has mass
    • Takes up space
  • 2. Gas is different from a solid or liquid because . . .
    • Has no definite shape
    • Particles are spaced farther apart
    • Can’t usually see or smell a gas
  • 3. Particle vs. Substance
    • A particle is the smallest piece of a substance that is still that substance
    • Substance is a unique form of matter different from all others
  • 4. All substances should be circled
    • Because each is a unique form of matter different from the others
  • 5. The plunger went up because
    • A gas formed and there was no place for the gas to go but up
    • New substance, the gas, was evidence of a chemical reaction
  • 6. If the plunger was pulled up
    • The volume of air would EXPAND because the particles would have more room to move about freely
  • 7. In a helium filled balloon . . .
    • There is empty space/nothing between the helium particles
    • If the balloon were compressed, the particles would become closer together because the volume of air was compressed
  • 8. Particles are placed in the syringe because . . .
    • 20 particles in syringe B and C
    • Placed the same as in syringe B because the amount of space did not change – just the end of the syringe was clamped preventing particles from getting in or out
