  • Everything you do online should revolve around content, and today, I’m going to go through some examples and talk about some ways to organize your content and website to get more value out of your content.
  • Balance Interactive is a full-service digital agency that has been around for over 15 years building successful websites for leading clients in the commercial, association nad government sectors
  • At Balance Interactive, we like to empower our clients to spread content to their audience in as many avenues as appropriate. But maintaining a lot of different social media accounts, and a website, and a newsletter is a lot of work. Often times, more work than a small association can handle, so we have worked with our clients to automate as much of this sharing as possible to make their lives easier and to still work towards our goals of more visitors, more interaction, etc…Create Once Publish ManyRepurpose content, if a post has an image or an infographic, create it for sharing (Pinterest) tag it, create a gallery, tag all blog entries to Efficiency for you! Consistency in how your content is organized. Easy to find your content. Easy to subscribe to content. Easy to remove content, so nothing is stale. Get more value out of your content, make things easier for your visitors to find.Be agile and organized

  • In this example, our client uses a news item content type and a newsletter content type. The newsletter gets created first and the each news item created that week will reference the newsletter node of the week. The news items are then available as individual taggable nodes that show up as “Related Content” throughout the site, and they show on the homepage as “Latest News”. When it is time for the newsletter to go out, the newsletter node automatically shows all the news items that have referenced it sorted by date, and the newsletter is sent to their subscribers using the Mailchimp module and Drupal. (Mailchimp isn’t the only e-news service that offers this functionality, but it is just used as an example. Even if your newsletter tool doesn’t integrate with Drupal, using this method, you can have Drupal format the newsletter into something you can easily copy and paste. The other added bonus to this functionality is that we also have a nice archive of our newsletters online, which isn’t always convenient with all of the 3rd party e-news services…
  • Ok, so in this example we have a client who puts out a multi-page report every month. When the report goes out, it is a big deal and we’ll need a way to spread the word about the report throughout the website and social media outlets. Because this is such a big product with a team of people working on the individual pieces, we wanted to build a way to bundle the individual pieces of content so they can travel through the approval workthrough.
  • When content gets delivered over many publishing avenues, you will want to make sure it goes through a strict editorial flow. For this I recommend the workbench suite of modules.
  • All this access control and state changing is great, but if a draft gets sent to the editor and he doesn’t know about it, what good is that? I’ve documented a special rule I wrote that will notify only the right roles in the right permission group triggered by the workbench moderation state change.
  • In this example there are two steps to finally getting the big report published. Step one: Make sure all the subpages are approved and ready for publishing. I did this using a custom PHP Rule triggered by a state change. If not all subpages are approved, a warning message will be shown stating which pages are not approved yet. If they are then the main report page will be set to approved. With the workbench moderation settings and permissions, I have limited moving a node to Published only from the Approved state. So, then we created another custom php rule that will publish all the subpages when the parent is sent to published. Thanks to the Workbench Scheduler Integration module, we can schedule this publishing state change to a specific day and time. https://drupal.org/project/scheduler_workbench
  • Next I want to talk about blogging.
  • Ok, let’s put your blog to work! First step, is to follow an editorial schedule. The most successful blogs consistently publish at the same times every week. It doesn’t matter so much when or how often you blogs is written as long as you do it consistently. Minimum once a week. Once you have your day picked, your can use the Scheduler module so you can write your post ahead of time and maybe send it down an editorial workflow, and then schedule the post to publish on the day you pick.Once that blog post goes out, you are going to want to tweet it. There are many ways to do this, but if you are already using the Twitter module to embed your twitter feed on your site then why not use it to also tweet from your site! Instead of sending out the standard title of post with link to post tweet, which let’s face it, will probably get ignored… I would recommend adding a twitter area to your blog content type for a unique tweet that will gather your audience’s attention. Then you can created a custom rule to tweet the contents of that field when the blog post is published. If you go this route, also check out the Shorten URLs module. It will shorten your url for the twitter post using the external service of your choice. If you aren’t into using the Twitter module, or you have a bunch of social media outlets you want to post you blog entry to, then why not create a custom Views RSS Feed and push the content using an external service like dlvr.it? The cool thing about this is that these feeds could be centered around the content of your blog and what you want to show the feed. Some examples of this: if your blog includes a podcast, then you can format your feed specifically for iTunes. If you want to send your post to Facebook, you can create your feed to select a specific image with each post as a preview of the post.
  • In this last example, I want to share some work we’ve been doing recently with one of our clients, Intelsat General. We are taking some of their most popular pages on their website and creating custom infographics and charts to help break up a lot of the text. As we do that we are keep Pinterest in mind. Pinterest has been blowing up lately! And it could be a great way to increase traffic and spread your site’s message, if you can integrate it on your site. Here are some tips on how to integrate pinterest: Add imagery to your site and particularly your blog. Make the images pinnable by adding text about what is in an image or what is on the page the image will link back to (I know I’m more likely to pin a blog entry and return back to it later, if the image I pinned tells me what is in the blog.) You should also create an easy way for people to pin your content. You can do this with the PinIt module with Drupal, which adds the standard PinIt button that comes with Pinterest, OR I’ve also seen some fancy jquery scripts around the web that will show the pinterest button whenever you hover over an image. I find that when I’m surfing the web, that the little Pinterest hover is very enticing. I’ll link to one of these tutorials in my follow up blog later this week at balanceinteractive.com
  • I know in our short time, I only got to skim the surface of what you can do with your content and Drupal, but what I really wanted to do was get you thinking about how these tools apply to your site, and how you can use your site to make your team more efficient and your visitors happier because they can get access to the content they want!
