In its quest for knowledge and understanding the Information Systems (IS) field has generally been torn between positivist and interpretivist approaches. However, in this paper an approach that accepts many of the underlying beliefs of both positivism and interpretivism is presented: the fictive approach. This blended approach - most comprehensively developed by Vaihinger - reveals how much of what we do in the IS field can be seen as creating and working with fictions. From the abstractive to the aesthetic all fictions are evident to some extent in the IS discipline. While the fictional approach has its challenges it is paradigmatically creative, rich and holistic; all important and arguably necessary characteristics when it comes to understanding Information Systems. Perhaps by legitimizing and exploring fictions in all their forms the IS field may finally mend the tear between the two warring paradigms and move forward in a bid to achieve the disciplines raison d'etre: making better sense of Information Systems.

Seatwave was growing fast, success was unabated, and industry awards were landing on their doormat. Infrastructure had been revamped, load patterns were understood. Everything was going just great… Until… The marketing team planned Seatwave’s first UK TV campaign – all regions – simultaneously, but only told the engineering team the day before the first advert was due to run! 10 seconds into the advert the site melted and there was a collective thud as heads hit desks. It was expensive lesson to learn but also the wake up call that forced everyone in Seatwave to focus on the performance of their site. In this session we’ll share that pain we experienced, and how we improved performance so that when all our competitors crashed during the UKs largest concert ticket sale, we were able to take 20 days revenue in just 2 hours! However, maintaining performance is a challenge, product owners want new features, the site starts to put on weight and slowly performance starts to degrade once more. Will it take another disaster to focus everyone on performance or is there another way to avoid “boom and bust”? We’ll talk about the steps we’re taking to avoid “boom and bust” by making both performance and the impact performance has on our customers visible to everyone across Seatwave including: Our Adobe Site Catalyst installation with a custom implementation of the W3C Navigation Timing API allowing us to segment our business KPI’s by speed. How we’re using a WebPageTest within continuous integration for our QA and production builds. How we constantly review our performance against competitors using our own installation of the HTTPArchive. Join us on our quest in search of the Holy Grail of truly understanding how web site performance affects our business, and the processes and systems we are putting in place to ensure we keep speed at the heart of our product development roadmap.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
