6. The Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef, one of the natural wonders of
the world, begins just off the coast of Bundaberg, 368
kilometres north of the state capital, Brisbane, and
extends over 2000 km north to western Papua New
Guinea. Brimming with life, colour and adventure, it is
in fact not a single reef, but rather a collection of over
2900 individual reefs, 300 coral cays and 600
continental islands. In 1979 the Great Barrier Reef
Marine Park was established, taking in over 98% of the
region, looking after the control, care and development
of this World Heritage-listed wonder.

8. GBR continued
The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) stretches 2,300 kilometres
along the Queensland coast and includes over 2,900 reefs,
and around 940 islands and cays.
Age: 8,000 (first began to grow about 18 million years ago)
Climate: Tropical, over 300 days of sunshine per year

10. The reef contains:
- 1,500 species of fish
- 411 types of hard coral
one-third of the world’s soft corals
- 134 species of sharks and rays
- six of the world’s seven species of threatened marine turtles
- more than 30 species of marine mammals, including the vulnerable
dugong.

17. Tours & Activities
There are a diverse range of tourism operations in the
Great Barrier Reef including day tours, overnight and
extended tours, snorkelling, scuba diving and fishing
charters, long range roving tours, aircraft or helicopter
tours, bare boats (self-sail), glass-bottomed boat
viewing, semi-submersibles and educational trips,
cruise ships, beach hire and water sports, passenger
ferries, whale watching and swimming with dolphins.
22. Protecting our marine wonderland
Historically, the GBR was regarded as a well protected,
pristine wonderland – a safe haven for delicate corals
and abundant fish. But as scientists came to
understand more about its complexities, a different
picture emerged. They discovered that poor fishing
practices, pollution and coral bleaching exacerbated by
increased sea temperatures due to global warming are
all seriously threatening the reef’s future.
23. Threats to the Great Barrier Reef
One threat is the Crown-Of-Thorns-Starfish which eats
coral.
Another threat is the fishing industry and over fishing.
The last threat but one of the worst threats are anchors.
