3. How does my media product use forms and conventions of real
media products?
I have followed the conventions of silent short films, such as Memories. This film was one that I found
on Youtube when conducting research for my short film, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and knew that I
would use it as an inspiration for my main product. Like other short films, especially those that are
older for example The Lumeire Brothers and later Charlie Chaplin, Memories uses music throughout
the piece and this makes the final product a lot more emotive.
My media ancillary tasks included those of a film poster and a magazine film review. My poster (on
previous page) uses the conventions of other film posters by including the Title, a main image and a
small section about the directors, editors, producers etc. The inspiration for my film poster came from
one I had found online, the film was called Purge and I knew that the style of it was one that I wanted
to recreate as it was a very moving and emotional picture. The film review (also on previous page)
uses the conventions of other film reviews, this mainly concerns the layout but also some of the
content. The layout I have structured to be like many reviews in magazines; including columns and a
white background. I found from research film reviews in magazines with the style that I wanted to
create, I looked online and in film magazines such as Flipside. I found that the single page spread
reviews were better in my opinion as they seemed to contain more text rather than a jumble of
images.
4. In what ways do my media products develop forms and
conventions of real media products?
My short film develops the conventions of other short films because most modern day short films
are not silent and do contain a fair amount of dialogue. My short film on the other hand does not
include a lot of dialogue and the majority of dialogue is actually a voiceover so is not naturally
occurring in the scenes. The story line of a short film often needs to be developed quickly, however I
feel that I am developing this convention with how I plan to structure my piece . I plan to use a more
fragmented chronology with the first scene showing the outcome of the story. This is a development
that I feel will work well because it will entice the audience into wanting to know how the outcome
of the story came about.
My film poster doesn’t really develop or challenge any of the conventions of existing film posters, in
actuality my film poster could have been improved had I included some developments of forms.
My film review develops the conventions of some existing reviews because it uses a different font and
doesn’t jump straight into the review but tells the reader a bit about the film first.
5. In what ways do my media products challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
My short film challenges the conventions of existing modern short films as a majority of these include
speech alongside the diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, however I feel that this will be successful
because as in “Memories” I will include music throughout that will be emotive and develop the
feelings that are being portrayed during.
After this challenge of conventions I felt that to challenge the conventions any further as it may have
made my final product not look as good and may portray the idea I had tried too hard to be different
and to challenge the conventions could hinder my progress into making a good final product.
