3. The Gateway to Exploration
In 1515 the Caribbean is conquered by the Spanish and the
islands become the launching pad for further explorations.
Pedrarias establishes a municipality on the south coast of
Panama in 1519 and becomes gateway to the colonization of the
Pacific coast and the focal point for the success of the developing
Spanish empire.
