2. Smithy
• It is understood to handle
relatively small jobs which
can be heated in open fire
or hearth (furnace)
• The shop in which the work
is carried out is called
Smithy shop
• Forging means , production
of those parts which must
be treated in furnace
3. Types of furnace used in smithy
workshop
Rotary Hearth Type Furnace
This furnace can be designed and manufactured to a corresponding
material’s shape & size. A maximum throughput of 1.5 ton/hr, 5 ton/hr or
8 ton/hr can be achieved through the use of a recuperate and
manipulator.
Batch Type Furnace
This furnace can correspond to variations of materials’ shape, size,
throughput, and required heat. Use of a recuperate can enhance furnace
operation and energy savings.
Conveyor Furnace
A conveyor belt furnace is a furnace uses a conveyor or belt to carry
process parts or material through the primary heating chamber for
rapid thermal processing.
4. Process of Smithy:-
• The 100mm and 120mm in
diameter mild
steel rod is given.
• The rotary
hearth furnace is
used and is lighted up
by the coal and the
blower is used for fire ,
so that it doesn’t get stop.
• The fire
is blown
properly so that the mild steel rod
can be heated uptil it’s forging
process.

5. • With the Help of RIVET or RING Tong the
piece of mild steel is kept in the furnace till its
becomes red hot.
• Then after few time when it reaches to its ,it
is taken out, rapidly it is hammered and again
kept in the furnace to make it hot from all
side.
• Thus, by this process it is made flat.
• The forging temperature of mild steel is 1250
to 1300 C.
7. • The rod is made
flatten as shown in
figure.
• Its is made of
18*65*65mm.
• When we do with
hammer it is slightly
rough surface we get,
So to make it soft we
use hammer and
Flatters.

8. • The side greater than desire
length is cut by heating the
rod , then the extra rod is cut
with the help of chisel and
hammer.
• By striking hardly with
hammer when the bar is hot,
it is cut.
• The right angle on all the
corner are made by hammer
and keeping it on flat
surface.
9. • The center point is then
marked with scale, hammer
and chisel.
• Again after heating the rod it
is kept on the Anvil and with
the help of chisel and hammer
the curved is made on the
rod.
• After heating the rod , it is
made “L” Shaped by
hammering.

11. Price of converting Mild steel rod to L
shape
The cost of steel is 47060 Rs./tonne .
At the smithy shop we were given rod of
approximately 0.5 kg.
So costing is 23.53 and the coal cost is
4420/short ton.
So total cost of smithy shop is 23.53Rs. Of coal
and 44.2 Rs. of coal for burning so
approximately 68Rs. Is cost.
