IRKit is an open source, Wi-Fi connected infrared remote controller developed by Masakazu Ohtsuka. It allows users to control home electronics like air conditioners using a smartphone app even when far from home. The device is an Arduino Leonardo derivative with an IR receiver and LEDs. It has public HTTP APIs and works with various platforms and languages. Over 4000 units were sold in Japan in 2014. The developer hopes to see more compatible devices and a "Home Electronics" category of apps in the future, and is interested in Apple's HomeKit technology.
